Is a iphone car charger polarity sensitive? In other words, how do I hook up a 12V power plug to run one on a positive ground system? PJView attachment 47747
Thanks Mickey, I understand about insulating the unit from grounding out, but it doesn't say if the iphone charger will work just by connecting the positive wire to the proper connection. Is an iphone charger polarity sensitive, especially when the car is running and the generator is charging? Don't want to damage anything. PJ
I believe the article says that you reverse the wires as well as insulate the body of the lighter; that will give you the proper polarity for the charger. Toward the end of the article he states that it works with his Garmin and cellphone charger:
The top picture shows the car with my Garmin running. Thatās grumpy me in the mirror. (I really dislike the device, particularly the stupid position of the off switch and also its menu arrangements, so my wife usually looks after it from the passengerās seat.) The socket also works with a cellphone charger, and presumably anything else.
I carry one of the battery packs that are sold for about $40 with a plugin for cig lighter attachment. Power for GPS, extra light and phone charging. Goes in house to recharge when used on road.
I hooked up a cigarette lighter outlet that comes on a coiled cord... wired it for positive ground (i.e., reversing polarity back to regular for the socket only). It all tucks out of the way when not in use.
