I need a catalytic converter

79 midget 1500, CA car.

My catalytic converter is pretty much hollow.... I can't pass smog without one. I understand that they're very hard to come by.

Anybody have any ideas?

Have you ever seen a grown man beg?

could you not just use a generic converter or one from another car further down the pipe?

Moss #444-310.

Rockauto list a 49 state catalyic converter for ~180. I don't know if this would work for you if you have a car originally sold in Ca.

Walker mufflers used to handle the most extensive line of replacement cats. So maybe call a few parts house, Napa, CarQuest, etc to see if they can look in their Walker fiche/catalogs....

Also, just came to me. Can't you get a waiver?

Cal smog used to have a waiver program available for older cars. If the manufacturer no longer offered, or you couldn't get a part to repair your car, or if the cost exceeded a certain number and that the car ran well otherwise they issued a waiver, after trying to get you to junk the car.

I need a CA cat conv. at the very least. Technically (by some new regulation) it is supposed to be an oem unit. I might be able to get around that reg due to age and the fact that B.L. has been gone for 30 years.

As far as a waiver.... the process is exhausting. You have call an 800 number to get things started. You inform them of the part you are looking for. The state then puts out the "feelers" for you. If they find a suitable part, then you have to buy it (at the sellers' price... can you say jack fee?)

If they can't find the part, then you go to a "referee" who certifies that the car would pass smogs tests except for the PART that you are looking for. You have to do this every two years.

Basically, the state is trying to force cars off the road. If you have a car that is 75/76 or newer that will not pass smog and you can't find the parts, your days are numbered.

I know that very obscure parts have been sourced through this site. I thought I would give it a try before I start looking to register the car out of state.

Thanks for the help, keep the ideas coming.

P.S. I'm also looking at ways to get the 49 state cat in the car by the mechanic, and then tested by a third party.

Well I'll be darned, I called them today and they said they did not have it. I'll try again tomorrow to see if it's for real and if they have in stock.

THANKS!

I just went through something like this with my son's 87 Volvo. We were told that you had to use an original part if the converter was within warranty, but if not, you could use a non-original replacement. We had it replaced at an ordinary muffler shop.

what is the inside of a Midget converter supposed to look like?

Her is a possible option:

It does not say whether is is CARB certified or not. There is probably no physical difference between a CARB certified unit and a non certified unit. It's just a matter of whether the manufacturer/distributer wants to go through the bureaucratic rigormoral of getting a CARB cert. The question is, will the inspector know the difference?

That's the conclusion I just came to with my mechanic, so that's the route we're going down.

Thanks for all of your input.

I could never own an LBC without all of your help!
