I need a CA cat conv. at the very least. Technically (by some new regulation) it is supposed to be an oem unit. I might be able to get around that reg due to age and the fact that B.L. has been gone for 30 years.
As far as a waiver.... the process is exhausting. You have call an 800 number to get things started. You inform them of the part you are looking for. The state then puts out the "feelers" for you. If they find a suitable part, then you have to buy it (at the sellers' price... can you say jack fee?)
If they can't find the part, then you go to a "referee" who certifies that the car would pass smogs tests except for the PART that you are looking for. You have to do this every two years.
Basically, the state is trying to force cars off the road. If you have a car that is 75/76 or newer that will not pass smog and you can't find the parts, your days are numbered.
I know that very obscure parts have been sourced through this site. I thought I would give it a try before I start looking to register the car out of state.
Thanks for the help, keep the ideas coming.
P.S. I'm also looking at ways to get the 49 state cat in the car by the mechanic, and then tested by a third party.
