Well after falling back in love with American cars of the 60s with my 68 Coupe DeVille, I have now decided that next I should attempt to acquire a first generation Toronado (I've always thought they were really cool looking cars inside and out) or maybe a first generation Riviera (I grew up in a Buick/Cadillac family).

First generation Riviera was always one of my favorite designs. If I'm not mistaken, I believe Cox had a gas engine model of that one, along with the Sting Ray.

If I'm remembering right, a custom early Riv won the Riddler award this year. Local guy here used to have a couple of them. I love the lines.
Those Tornados never did much for me, but hey! I like a lot of weird things no one else much cares for, so who am I to talk?

We used to love seeing those come in with a slapping drive chain.
And popped CV joints.
Getting an engine out with the trans bolted to the side of the block was fun, too.

Thanks Billy, I need the encouragement. I agree that the 65 riv is where it's at.

And, best of all, you could probably fit your LBC in the trunk of the Riv. Growing up, a friend of mine's parents had a Toronado, so I've always had a soft spot for the '65 - '70 models.

I've also been partial to the second gen Rivieras '66 - '68. They are similar in styling to the Toronado, but use a conventional rear-wheel drive layout. Right now, they are not commanding the kind of prices that the 1st Gen Rivieras are, so you may be able to pick up one in decent condition at a fairly reasonable price.

There's so many really undervalued / underappreciated Detroit Iron from the early to mid sixties. The "Bubble Top" GM Coupes of '61 and '62 are really spectacular, '61 - '64 Continentals and the aforementioned Rivieras and Toronados.

My dad was a GM master mechanic, my grandad was shop foreman for the local IH dealer- so Fords or Ford Corporation vehicles are strictly verboten.

A fellow who owned a gas station not far from me back in the 60s had a new Riviera and parked in front of his station every day. It was a Burgundy color and had the rear mounted spare tire. I guess it had all the bells and whistles on it! He was no piker when it came to buying cars. Everybody admired it. By todays standards, it was a real boat! Most trucks didn't weigh as much as that did! :highly_amused: PJ

this just showed up on Bring a Trailer - I believe him when he says what he invested.

Oh snap its the right color too! I have mixed feelings on the powertrain, however; I do believe that is *the* car. You couldn't build it for that and that thing should scream. I think you should make a phone call.

Oh man that is nice, but I too have mixed feelings on the powertrain. I am a huge nailhead fan and would rather have one with the 401 or 425. I also don't have the 18500 laying around.

Now that I think about it I think I've seen that one for sale before. Yeah, I "might" want a dual quad 425 but if you're gonna do a swap, that's the one to do.

Buy it or you'll regret it, you NEVER see '65's hardly ever much less that well done much less for sale that cheap.

It is way too far out of my price range, and even if it wasn't I'll have to wait a year or two before adding to the collection again. It has just been over four months since I added the Coupe DeVille to the family. Michelle would kill me if I bought another one so soon.

The 65's disappearing headlights are soooo cool though.
