SWARF???? You guys are killing me.

No; Its from the "Sports car services"site, and I just looked it up, shavings and such.

"Swarf" is the term I hear and use. Refers specifically to the metal chips, shavings, etc. created by machining operations. Pretty sometimes, especially if you get a nice tight curl; but always a problem to clean up and keep out of places it doesn't belong (particularly the oil passages in a crankshaft).

Analagous to sawdust in carpenter lingo?

Exactly. With the distinction perhaps that sawdust is pretty much all the same shape, while swarf may vary from fine power to long stringy curls several feet long. I remember reading a caution from someone where a long curl had actually gotten inside the lathe motor and shorted it out!

I`v seen very fine swarf from honing cylinders wipe out a set of bearings because caution wasn`t taken by the mechanic to protect the crank journals while honing the cylinders, costly mistake indeed.
i`v never seen swarf on a new crank!
Swarf on a regrind from a machine shop! Very likely.

Apparently, you haven't worked Particle board, MDF, poplar and Mahogany on the same table saw, jointer and belt sander. :hammer:

True enough, I haven't. But I find it hard to believe that they could produce chips many times longer than the piece being worked.

Sounds a lot like "Barf" and apparently neither are very good, when referring to your engine parts.
