Amazing how technology changes things. Got home from holidays to find a broken washing machine. Quickly diagnosed a broken (actually stripped) coupler. went on Youtube to not just find out how to replace the coupler, but, even more wonderfully how to strip down the machine - honestly, without the video I would have been there with a can opener and a chisel, with the video it was a 5 minute job. amazing!
 
My washer just developed a leak. Dripping through the floor onto ceiling in basement Washer is 13 years old. How can I tell if its the pump or the drywell? Repairman won't even come out to look at it. Says machine is too old. I'd hate to spend $700 on a new washer only to discover it was the drywell.
 
Not YouTube related, but when the LCD menu went out on my otherwise perfectly functioning Epson Printer (10 yrs old at time), I found fix on a printer forum! Involved shorting out a very small fuse link on a circuit board with a small dab of solder. That was several years ago and it's still working like a champ

when looking for small leaks, I will put a piece of paper under the suspicious spot and see if there are drips on it - could you fit some paper/ cardboard under the pump?

what is a drywell?

Just diagnosed a fault with the beer cooler in th' garage, courtesy of YouTube. Can't sustain those long trips to th' kitchen fridge y'see. It takes all of forty extra steps!

Turns out th' beer locker had one too many hits due to power failure here in the Lightning Capitol of the World. Starter relay failed. Have two coming from Hong Kong by way of Amazon. Another modern wonder... total cost: under ten bucks and a bit of my time. Remarkable.

Mind boggling isn't it. I had to buy some sockets for our low voltage pot lights - Less than $5 including delivery for a dozen. I wish I could source local and even more so built local, but, couldn't even figure out where to start - and I tried. But I can't figure out the economics of offshore either.
