I looked at the car

All I know for sure is that I can get a rebuilt od tranny, ready to install, from Eric Jones in Ohio, for about $1200.

Shipping on the tranny is $95, cheaper than roadtripping at $3 a gallon!

((I agree with the early bidding. And I know I'll get sniped out at the last minute and not win this auction if I do bid on it))

All you have to do is wait till there is about 30 seconds till the auction is over and then go big or stay home...lol. I am guilty of sniping but then again I miss auctions every now and then since I won't bid till it is almost over.

So what's a 'go big' bid?

Put in the absolute most you are willing to pay for an item as your maximum bid. That way you are likely to get on top of others who are trying to snipe as well. If you don't get the item then it went for more than you were willing to pay anyway. Cuts down on the emotional bidding that often causes people to pay too much for something. Every auction I look at, I decide way before it is over just how much it is worth to me.

$550. I'm not going to pay more than that for it. A guy in our car club snagged one at the junkyard for $75. I'll beg, bribe, plead and coerce him into selling me that one first.

I've made offers on cars that up to a year later they've called me to see if I was still interested.
I've also had people make a lowball offer on a car I was selling and call back months later to see If I would take it (hasn't happened yet).
There are a lot of deals out there and if you wait they come around.
My youngest brother bought my 1960 convertible Beetle from me he traded it to my oldest brother (in part for a 1993 convertible Camero) and my oldest brother was just offering it back to me for some parts I have for his 1969 Camero.
This all took place over a 5 year period.
I'm going to look at a 1976 MGB that a former student of mine offered to me for about $1000.00. I know the interior is shot and it doesn't run but I've only seen a few bad pictures of it.
I know it's probably worth only $500.00 to $700.00 depending on it's actual condition so I won't get too excited. Besides if I don't get rid of another project before I bring this one home I can't bring this one home. MaMa has spoken.
If I don't want it or can't get it I'll post the results of my inspection.
Did I mention the guy's e-mail is in part Cardnlfan?

((boy I'm glad I don't have a MaMa speaking to me!))

I'm going on the assumption I'm not getting this car. And that's fine. There are project cars everywhere. I have not heard back from the owner...I must have really offended him with the offer! ~grin~

I've already got a couple leads on other cars...

Now to find that overdrive for Emma!!!

MaMa is being quite fair I do have too many projects and I did promise to get rid of some before I get another.Drat!!!
I'm trying to contact the guy about the 76 so I can look at it this weekend. So far I'm the only person he has talked to about getting rid of it.
Maybe he would like a nice 87 Honda Accord to replace the dead car in his driveway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

That '87 Honda Accord is a perfect first car for a 16 year old with a new driver's license!! Stick a 'for sale' sign in it and park it near the high school!!

Nah that isn't as much fun as telling my 15 1/2 year old daughter that I 'm going to trade it for a broke down toy car ( her description of MG's).
I actually have a lot of high school kids that drive by my house every day. ( Did I mention that I have 4 daughters?)
So I'm parking it in front of the house After I get the radiator replaced and some tires on it with tread. (Did I mention that one of my daughters used to drive it?)

4 daughters? Yowser.

Why aren't you keeping the Honda for the 15 1/2 year old to drive?

Best turn the rotors and replace the brake pads if a dot drove it! I'm speaking from experience!

The girl has decided, since her older sister had driven the car, that it is not good enough for her to drive.
This after a new suspension. new front end, new brakes. Not to mention the alternator, water pump and carb I had put on it just before we took it back from her sister.
We have a rule in our house that you respect what you earn. She doesn't want to help out around the house and refuses to save any money towards transportation or other future expences, so I'm selling the car and using the money for some much needed improvements to MAMa's 80 MGB.
We have other spare transportation, 84 Toyota Celica GT, which my wife is using till I get the parts for the clutch and exhaust for the B.
The girl drives, with an adult, on occasions, and is attending drivers ed but seems to feel we owe her a car and an unlimited curfew. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The girl is going to learn quickly, right? Am glad to see parents handling things properly!

I have a sneaking suspicion that in 6 or 8 months, she'd LOVE to have that Honda to drive...considering the options.

By the way, the guy still has the '71, hasn't sold it. Dahubby called today. I'm sending him up there this evening to look at it...and offer $500. ~evil grin~

Way to go. I was wondering if the guy wasn't taking you serious because of that gender thing.
I'm sure if he hears the rustle of cash enough he'll bend.
The hardest dealer I ever met on cars was a women who knew what she wanted and what it was worth.
Some men get caught up in the machismo so bad they will plunge head first into a bad deal just to save face.
I've been guilty of it in the past but I know better now. Besides being broke helps a lot too!

Always take cash when you go to buy a car, Janel - offers don't mean anything!

I had the money ready that night, but didn't offer til the next day. I told them I could have cash at their house in 25 minutes. The guy was very easy to talk to - the wife on the otherhand, was a Nazi. She should have stayed home and cooked dinner or something when I was looking at the car. I'd have that '71 by now.
