I just had a thought:

Seems to me it was '56 when my mother got her TD, and I messed with maintenance a little and tried to find an excuse to drive it a lot. I'd had my license for 4 years by then, but owned detroit iron. Guess that gives me 50 years...and still don't have much more skill than I did then.

6 years of LBC and 40+ years of messin with American road tanks.

I've been a car enthusiast for as long as I can remember, as I come from a long line of gearheads. My grandfather, O.R. Keith, began his career in 1917 at the Ford Motor Co. technical school in Dearborn. He then worked as a mechanic at a Ford Dealership in Roanoke, VA, for 23 years. In 1944, he started O.R. Keith's Garage in Roanoke which he owned and operated until 1986.

From age seven or eight, I used to hang out at the garage in the summers. It was a erstwhile meeting place for local car enthusiasts, gearheads and street racers. Their passion for cars was passed on to me at a very early age. Happily, I've never been able to lose it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I think it's very interesting that my enthusiasm for cars has a connection that goes back to the early days of the automotive industry.

I'll bet there are others with similar stories on this Forum, too.

Anyone else?

I have owned at least one British sport car since I was 16 (almost 40 years). Not all of them ran. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

The first was an MGA and the second was a TR-3.

I got my first Brit-car, an Austin A-40 "woods car", when I was 14.

I was a high school auto shop teacher for nine years and my students did some ~Neat Projects~ , but I never directly earned a living as a mechanic.

I first raced my Mk 4 Sprite at Bridgehampton around '72 ( and I ran autocrosses since around '69), so I've racing Spridgets on and off, for at least 34 years. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

I was dragged by the bumpers, kickin' and screamin' almost thirty years ago into the cave. Still have grease under my nails. That's what bright red nail polish is for, to cover up the evidence of wrench handlin' and pan scrapin'.
If I had to do it over again (?)... I'd make him push the cars to clutch start 'em in the parking lots.
Labour of love, I guess!

Mehh-heh... You on this, Janel?!?!

"She's My Girl, My Girl..."

...but it's only been thirty-some years.... Things *could* change...

Howdy Horsemits! joining in to hold yer own?! I promise Doc's said only good things of his better half.
I wish I could get my SWMBO to take even a tiny intrest in the "grease under the nails" experience... oh well.

oh geeze... doc's a singin' again! head for the hills! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

"No Hill High Enoughhhh... No Valley lowww enouughhh..."

Sometimes I think I'm lucky that my wife even tolerates my interest.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

And I've tried fairly hard to get my daughter interested, but she's not interested, and I know if I push it she'll become even more negative. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

All I really need do is to find a nice little LBC she'd like to give her the bug....

sneaky might work.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

..Started in ,62, my 1st car was a TC, for a few years, then a "full autocross" Sprite in mid 60's, 1970 saw a new TR6, had that for about 8 years. '78 I bought a solid but neglected '72 Pantera and restored it, had that for 20+ years, wot fun! '89 to 2000, 2 Tiga Sports 2000's and a year in an Elden FF. 2003 to present, the "Lil red bastd" my 100/4 Chevy that I just restored.... Jeez, these things keep one young! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

That must be why so many of us folks have gray hair. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif---Keoke- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hair?!? What's this "hair" youse guys refer to?!? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have a slightly long mane of "Silverish" blonde hair with brown highlights. (we don't go "GREY") Thinking 'bout donating the tail, soon, though! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

GOR... I may be in *negative* numbers then! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

You just want "tail" shots, Dale!!!

I'll see if I can get her to pose for her "Cabbage Patch Doll" parody... That oughta do it.

Hmmmm! Please excuse the delayed response...Workload a bit cumbersome ATM. I'm QUITE sure pics won't appear unless my hermission is given. AS far as the ("hurrumph") Cabbage Patch display is concerned, there will be a price for that. For all I know, I could end up on the "Today" show for really tasteless contributions to the net. Besides, this is a serious forum. I'll be havin' a talk with the doc, bout this. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif
