I hope this isn't one of us....

Awful!

Horrible stories like this always remind me to double check my auto insurance policy to ensure that my LBC is insured for it's current, restored value.

Poor guy, I'm glad it didn't ignite while inside his garage!

That's a real shame but he's lucky he didn't lose his house too. We knew some folks that lost everthing (a mansion) when their car caught on fire while trying to jump the battery.

About a year after we built our house my wife calls me up at work, I had only been there a few minutes, "there's smoke in the garage and the alarms going off". I rush home, beat the fire department there. Its black inside the garage. I open the side door very slowly and have a running garden hose in my hands. I start hosing every thing down. No flames so I hit the garage door openers. About half way up I see flames start up from under a MGB sitting there on the right side of the garage. I immediately hose it down. Flames go out and I push it outside. About that time the Fire truck shows up. They said I was lucky it didn't blow and they fussed a me for doing that. No damage to the house other than a little smoke smell in the garage for a few weeks. Had to replace interior in the MGB. The cause of the fire was a the battery cable from the back of the car to starter grounded to the body close to the back of the trans were there was grease and oil everywhere. Needless to say I disconnect or remove the battery from any car that is in the house garage.

Folks, what is it with MGBs? I have been on the forum 15 minutes this morning, and have read of THREE "spontaneous combustion" car fires? Are MGB's "prone"?

In most cases, the owners were lucky enough to have their cars out on the driveway. I would like to be a fly on the wall to hear a guy explain to his wife how his "over-priced [no insult intended] old car" just burned down their home! "Well, you see, Honey, there was this metal clamp..." Oh Lordee...

Is this unique to the B, or do the T-series and A's also have this tendency?

Thanks in advance.

[I don't exercise - it spills my coffee.]

I read recently that Spinal Tap drummers are MGB fans

This must be a phenom we can blame on th' Triumphs. There's nothing I know of that is endemic to causing spontaneous immolation of MGB's.

It's a conspiracy, I tell ya.

In the case of rubber bumpered MGs with the single carb....this is a case of raw gas dripping onto a hot catalytic converter.

Poof!
