I got the bolt now what?

ok, so I got the crankshaft bolt free, but now the crank pulley won't budge. any tips as to get it off? also I would like to offer a new method to get that particular bolt off. being a one man team over here, I tried to get my wife to help me by me putting my weight on the block and she putting her weight on the breaker bar. well that was absolutely useless, and since its impossible to put the socket on the bolt and bump the starter that was obviously out of the question. so then I positioned the block under the front end of the car, took it off the jack stands and used the cars weight to hold the block stead and in about 2.2 it came right off. of course now I'm sitting here scratching my head as to how to get any further, so any tips will help.

Well it pulls off, has a key in it only.

Lots of BP Blaster. Might even need to get a wheel puller if it won't come otherwise. But first a board behind it a pry a bit with a very large screw driver, don't damage anything.

The book says it just comes right off.....

Try reading the manual to your car.

Or...Apply wooden wedges behind the pulley and preload em, then tap it at 12,3,6 & 9 O'clock...
Some PB blaster & a small amount of heat might help.
Otherwise....tap, tap, tap.

If all else fails.....Do like jlaird says and get a puller.

I bought a set of pullers at Harbor freight for about $10. My efforts to pry the pulley off were wasted. I put the puller on there and was able to turn it by hand to get the pulley off. It was super easy!

Bingo, Harbor Freight is great for tools that we only seldom use. Not so great for the professional.

Just don't let the urge to apply a great deal of force with the puller win you over. You can warp pulleys with those things. Set it up and get a decent amount of tension on it then tap on it with a bronze hammer. Let the puller do the work for you but the vibration is what will break it free..not gorilla torque.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif If the three-armed puller isn't making much progress, watch the pulley very closely to make sure it isn't bending. My dad and I got to straighten out a pulley after I unsuccessfully tried to use a puller to remove one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yes, a three prong puller works well, go slowly, make sure everything is even, when you get some tension on it and it still won't come off, get out the bloody torch

I'm not gonna torch it, I'm looking to sell this thing, so I can't be messing it up. I just need to get the crank out to clean the block as best as I can. and it is still really heavy with the crank in it. so I have to do this "humanely". do you all think a puller would "warp" the crank pulley? that thing is like a block of metal.

A puller from harbour freight is in-superiour, so a bit of heat with the tension should pop it. Make sure that it aligned evenly, with not to much pressure, wear gogles and do not stand in the line of fire.

I was only kidding

I think I may just heft the bolt into the truck and take it to kragen and use their puller, i can also go to the auto hobby shop here on base, but I don't want to lift that blck, it weighs a ton. and aside from aheat gun, that I don't think will get the block hot enough I think lifting it into the truck will be my only option for now. thanks for all the tips guys I really appreciate it.
