I let some smoke outa my wires today... Turned onto my street and the car acted all 'wonky' when i mashed the gas pedal. So, I looked down and immediately notice the charge light had a medium'ish glow going, and then I noticed the smoke was excaping from the steering column cowl! By all recollections I would gues I released a good 1/4 to 1/2 oz of the stuff.

She's my daily so I had to do the trouble shooting and repair pronto. I took the column a part and couldn't find anything amiss. I put the keys back into the ignition and turned the power back on. While looking at the column for where the smoke was coming from i noticed that I was in silence; complete silence. I have one of those Facet fuel pumps that *never* stop making noise when the power is on. So, I figured I'd better check out what's going on back there. With the power still on, I went into the boot. I moved my tool box out of the way and bumped a wire in the fuel pump access hole area, and the pump sprang back into life. I said to myself, "hmmmmmm... odd, what's this wire here? OUCH! that thing is HOT!" Apparently, an over looked wire found ground back there when I hit a bump today. Some Snip Snipping and a little tape later, I had the car restarted the car and ran through op-checking all of the electricals. All the electric goodies were working fine again and the engine was no longer acting 'wonky'. So, I guess all's good again, sept I need to put 1/2 oz of smoke back into me wires...

Any one got a good source for the good stuff? Also, where's the access nipple for injecting the stuff back in? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Rob,

Take about 1/2 oz from a good Havana, insert into a hypodermic needle. Inject into a wire near where it came out. Under no conditions should you use the smoke from any herb other than tobacco. It will make your electrical system act wacky, not to mention the person smoking it to geterate the smoke needed in your system.

Got Cheech and Chong? They'll put the smoke back into your whole car for a small fee /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif.

I mentioned in a previous thread that I need to invent a device that puts the smoke back into the wires. Do I have my first customer already? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Rob, if you look closely at the end of one of your bullet connectors, you will see a small hole. This is where the smoke refill point is. I think it takes the #14 needle supplied with the kit.

OK , So I have logged in over half a million miles in MGB's since high school and have never let any smoke out. Should I quit while I'm ahead?

Nah.... You probably absorbed the lightly escaping smoke over the years. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif That's why we all love these cars so much! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif Also why one isn't enough, and why after years without one, someone will crave another!

I've had at least as many miles pass under me butt as Alan in MGB's, and the Elan clock has been around once plus 80K showing. No smoke from my cars' harnesses, but I've seen some ~things~. One of the most dramatic "Loosing of the Smoke" scenes didn't involve the harness: A Spridget got a clutch renewed by the owner, he neglected to reinstall the ground strap. Grounded through the throttle cable and WOOF! Cable was a nice medium well, throttle linkage fused into uselessness. Luckily, no REAL fire.

I've seen that particular stunt pulled more than once. Luckily, the first time I saw it, it made me doubly conscious of hooking up the ground strap at the clutch slave, so it's never happened to me. Yet.
