Wedge I give up. How do I get the water pump out? TR7

Well the subject pretty much sums it up. I can't get my (12-vane) water pump out of my TR7 block. Everything else is off the engine and the engine is on a stand. The *only* thing in/on the block that's not part of the cast (aside from the oil sludge) is the water pump.

To make matters worse, I've put a bolt in the top of the pump with something around it so that I can try pounding it up, but that didn't work and the bolt eventually just came out, stripping all of the threads in the pump.

According to my manual, it should pop out. Something like "withdraw the water pump" were the instructions. Reminds me of a humor list I read awhile back....

Any ideas? What is that bolt in the top for, anyway? Oh, and is the 12-vane pump better and would it be fine to replace with a 6-vane if needed?

Okay.. I did this back in 1989, so my memory is not fresh.

The water pump does indeed pull out. What I had done at the time was mount a bolt into the top of the pump. I had then affixed a slide-hammer, something like a dent puller, onto the bolt. This allowed me to extract the pump without inducing unnecessary stress by trying to use a lever.

Since you have stripped out the holes, I would recommend using a tap and die to rethread the hole and try again. The pump is an interference fit and is not easy to remove. But it does come out.

Good Luck

Chris

Thanks, I think that's what I need to know. I think the hard part is going to be finding some threading taps (whatever they're called) for a L.H. thread. My dad has every shape and size, but only in R.H. of course.

Any decent industrial supply house carries left hand taps. (J&L Industrial, Production Tool, etc.) They are generally the same price as a right hand tap.

Ugh, all week on it and it still won't come out. AND I did a dumb thing, got frustrated, and started prying on a geartooth with a screwdriver. Now I gots a little chip in it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There's nothing hold it in there, right? Just the water pump housing on top? ARRGGHHH!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Some times this sucker will have to come out in pieces due to the above mentioned slidehammer. They come in different sizes, so get a big knocker and give it all you've got!!!
Good luck

Now that you have chipped the gear, you'll want to replace the unit with the new "gold plated" unit, (unless you get lucky and find a cheap one on Ebay, (i doubt it though)).
I had the same problem last summer with mine, if you are VERY careful, you can get a punch through the weep hole in the side of the block to knock on the brass casting (which is what is holding it in the block). tap on it and knock it loose, then go at it again with the slide hammer. BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE PUNCH.

steve99 -- not quite sure what you're describing to do in order to get it out. What kind of a punch? And do I just start tapping on the brass casting inside the weep hole?

Thanks for everyon'e help! I'm wondering if I should just take it to the machine shop (where I'll to the boring / boiling) and see if they can get it out.

Oh yeah, I do have a "spare" water pump from an earlier acquisition. It's an older 6-vane that's more or less seized up (I can't spin it hardly at all). I was just assuming I could take the center shaft out (the one with the gears on it) and use it with my 12-vane head on my freshly chipped shaft. Or will that not work?

Ugh.

Hegg, Yes, place a punch through the weep hole opening against the brass casting and persuade away. You can change your six vane impeller with your twelve vane, however, with the damage done to the gear I would highly recomend biting the bullet and getting one of those new gold plated units. That said, if you go that route, you dont have to be quite as carefull with the punch while convincing the old one out of the block.

YAY!!! I got it!!! WOOO HOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Doughnuts for everyone!

I finally got it out after months of trying. What ended up working was a slide hammer rented from AutoZone. Now I can take it back and get my $80 back. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for everyone's advice! Now to save up the money to get the block rebuilt.
