Remember the scene in "It's a Wonderful Life" when Uncle Billy takes the Building and Loan receipts to the bank and inadvertently hands off the envelope to Mr Potter? Uncle Billy then goes to make the deposit and discovers that the money is gone!
Well I had a similar (feeling) experience tonight. Today I sold a camera to a local gentleman and he paid in cash. I had the envelope with a rather large sum of cash in the front inside breast pocket of my leather jacket. On the way home I stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few items. Once home, I put the groceries up, then went to take my coat and hat off to hang in the closet.
Well, a little while ago (just before midnight), I thought I'd better get that cash out of my coat and put it somewhere safe until I can deposit it tomorrow. So I went to the closet and reached into my coat pocket where I thought had the cash, but there was no envelop! Well, as you might imagine, a frantic search of the house ensued, then the car, then the garage...you get the idea. I was trying to retrace my steps and looked in every conceivable location but to no avail! By this time, I was feeling pretty sick! "Did I drop it at Smiths? Did I drop it on the ground when I thought I was putting it in my pocket?" What the &*%$^& did I do with it?!!
Well, just about the time I decided it was probably gone forever, I took one more look in the front closet (I had already checked my coat twice). I reached up on the top shelf and pulled my hat off the shelf to see if I might have put it under my hat...no dice. Just then I noticed something, barely visible, on top of a plastic storage box my wife keeps on the top shelf in the closet (for her scarfs, small purses, etc). I reached for the item and, to my amazement and delight, it was the envelope with the cash! In retrospect, what must have happened was, I took the envelop out of my jacket pocket, then set it up there to free up my hands as I took my jacket off to hang it up. Then I removed my hat and put it up on the top shelf and just walked away, forgetting to retrieve the envelop.
Whew, all's well that ends well, but that was about as much excitement as this old heart can take for one day!
