Wedge I drove my friend's TR8 today....now I hate my TR6

Re: I drove my friend's TR8 today....now I hate my

True. I guess I just love them for what they were, and are. As you say, "different strokes........"

shhhhh...talk like this is going to drive the prices up on the 8's and I'm looking for another one.

Tom

I am always shocked that even the really nice condition ones can't even bring $10K.

I'm in between Tomshoddy and this TR8 lovefest.
I make absolutely no comparsion between the TR8 and the earlier TRs.

Which brings up a really important point between traditional (body on frame) TR's vs the unitized body construction of the TR7/8. The TR2-6 was an evolution of design and engineering. The TR7/8 was a more of a revolution. Especially in design.

While the production dates of my two TR's are only about 6 years apart, their feel is more like decades apart.

They are - about three! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Again, apples and oranges.

I have been curious, what have been the weak points of the TR8 and/or what areas need the most improvement ?

My buddy over in Erath, LA restored his TR8 hardtop and I finally got to put it through it's paces. YIKES! that thing does run. Basically a stock engine, well almost stock, with small Holley 4V and totally custom wiring (the one I talked about that is wired like a '60s muscle car). The TR8 is awesome when it comes to torque. Unbelievable power compared to the TR6 (even highly modified engine such as mine). Don't get me wrong, I really don't hate my TR6, it is just such a throwback to earlier times, shake, rattle, roll, etc.
The TR8 is a totally modern car by comparison. I think it has finally come into its own time. I was impressed....

Good thing you have not driven a Stag yet, you would hate both the TR8 AND the TR6!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

Good question, Allan. My only complaints about my TR8 would be:

(1) Too much plastic in the dash. Not just trim, but the actual structure

(2) Prone to rust (Surprise!)

(3) Stock wheels - 13" - can't find decent tires

(4) Brakes are OK for everyday driving, but anything more "spirited" requires an upgrade (Good time to increase wheel size!)

(5) Goofy electrical system (Surprise, again! Take a look sometime at the relay system for the A/C cars - all the relays for radiator fan operation - gotta be a better way!)

I can't honestly think of anything else to list here. Granted, I'm pretty biased, as this thing is running great and the smile factor while driving is through the roof!

ONe more good thing about TR8's, all the TR7 donars and cheap supply of parts.

Re: I drove my friend's TR8 today....now I hate my

I like all the comments, cause I can relate to them, but one.....the exhaust sound, chop off the silly resonaters and put some nice big bore tuned rolled edge chrome straight pipes. You want sound,...I got SOUND. My TR6 with an ANSA had a great sound, but make no mistake, the TR8 when I stomp the loud pedal now sounds like the Battle of Gettysburg.
