Busy day at work today. Four surgeries and a lot of other DVM stuff. To add to my pain, one of my office staff had to leave at noon. After I got done that left me with the clean-up from the days work. Well, I wanted to get home and get some time in on the carbs. So after cleaning up at the practice I did this in about 60 mins. Before:

I've given you a clue. How did I do it? I did paint the the air filters late last week. Should I really polish them up or is it a waste of time as the Al will oxidize over time.

Hmmm. Let me guess! Did you use the surgical clean-up equipment in the office?
 
Ultrasonic cleaner I think.

When I purchased the practice, years ago we ended up with 2 Ultrasonic cleaners. One has been sitting all these years, so I got it out and it made quick work on all the grease and varnish. A little 1500 grit sand paper and Mothers polish on the bells and........ I polished my carb for my Triumph last year by hand/dremel it took hours.

I saw one Jay Leno has big enough to put an engine in.

I took the tops off my ZS carbs and used a buffing wheel in a drill press with tripoli brown polishing compound. Then switched wheels and gave them a further treatment with (regular) Mothers.
They look like chrome.

You can find used ultrasonic cleaners on eBay. I haven't looked recently, but in the past I've seen quite a few.

Yes, the aluminum will oxidize, but they'll look great for a while.

I've had good luck with Rustoleum hammertone paint for the filters.
