I went to get my oil changed in the Expedition and I walked outta there $120 lighter.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gotta be more to this story...

what the heck kind of oil they put in that thing? Is the filter made of Platinum with Diamond inlays? Or did the thing require a blood transfusion from the Exxon Valdez? YOWSERS!

Sheesh, and one of the arguments commoners use against driving a classic car daily is "high maintenance costs"...

I'm with you Vince, $95 for the wife's Envoy.
Multi-axle, full synthetic, 8 quarts, on-star computer reset. I think that monster met all the 'fine print' additions.
The warranty dictates what goes in it I think.
$20 for my RAV4.

This is why I do my own maintenance. About $20 to change the oil myself, and I know it's done right. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Oil change $20.99 - OK Fine
Extra oil $3.75 - OK Fine
Air Filter $24.99 - OK Fine - It was filthy and I was there.
Rear Diff $29.99 - This "looked" bad. He showed me the magnetic drain plug and it had what looked like an sludgy/metallic residue. I just got the truck - used so I said what the heck.
Diff fluid ala recommended synthetic $30.00

Plus tax

I'm heading out on a driving Vacation and decided to just have this done as I am not going to be able to do it by Sat AM.

One off the "mechanics" tried telling me I need to flush the crankcase. I told him yes I want my oil changed. In his best broken Indyish he replied that it needed to be "flushed" They pour some cap in there run it a bit and it will clean all the sludge out. I've been changing oil in cars since I'm 10 and I've yet to do this. He had already started the rear when they pulled this flushing crap and wanted to put $4.00 a quart oil in to boot. I tell them I do this all the time & it seemed to [censored] them off. What a line of BS I feel like they were feeding me.

No warranties on this truck and I am a frequent oil changer so I opted to go regular oil. I pouring it out in two months anyway.

Never again, never again.

Yep, I'd call that highway robbery. Just one of the many reasons I avoid all quickie lubes like the plague.

ironically... they don't lube the car owner prior to giving them the bill......

I an sooooooo in the wrong business. $25 to change a $10 air filter. Do that a few times and you won't need to be " lubed up" by the shop. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I went into a Valvoline a few months ago (shame) and when I told them I worked at a dealership, the manager actually came out and knocked some cash off the price. I always do my own oil but I was way past due and just did not have time.

I only use these lube places maybe once a year if I am in a pinch or a hurry. Everytime I tell myself "don't go for the extra's". Strange - I don't know why I did it.

vping, and you be ah "new yoakah" ? you just shot the heck oudda dah budjet for the mgb "retractable" project. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

I used to work next to the dealership where I bought my first Saturn. They were convenient, and the prices were absolutely reasonable. Except in similar or extreme circumstances I will never use one of those shops - especially after seeing so many "consumer" stories on the news about them not actually doing some of the work they charge for.

The reality is I can change my own oil in less time than it takes to drive to one of those shops, wait for them to do the work, then drive home.

aerog, in my mostly mis-spent youth i had a job in the parts dept. of a local pontiac dealer people would drop off their cars in the morning for an oil change, one of our mechanics would first open the hood and clean off the valve cover/covers then quick put it on a lift spay down the oil filter and associated area with some type of cleaner and a rag then just park the car in the lot for customer pick up. yup that was the "special" oil change. shortly after i quit they went out of business /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/pukeface.gif

Doesn't surprise me. That's what some of the TV people have been finding. The typical oil change wasn't a big deal, but the add-on stuff, filter changes, etc, weren't being done.

If you want to be sneaky buy some anti-sabatage lacquer then mark the filters and drains. That at least gives some indication that they at least had the car on a lift.

I as well, do my own oil changes {and much much more}. Tired of bieng ripped off! {doesn`t do your engine any good either}.
Once a year I do the "Flush" thing On the crankcase. Here`s what I do, drain the old oil. leave the old filter in place. Add three quarts of #1 Diesel fuel and a quart of new oil. start the engine DO NOT REV IT UP during this process! Let it idle for four or five minutes. Drain all contents from the crankcase, remove the old filter. Replace with your favorite oil and a new filter and be on your way. I know some of you will shudder at the thought of doing this. I`v been doing it for years on various vehicles and have yet to cause any harm to one. I have a 98 Honda Accord going on 275,000 miles now and it runs like a top. My 1990 chev 350 Blazer is going on 250,000 {Gives a puff of Valve guide smoke} on start up but still running strong.
Whatever you do NEVER EVER send your wife to an oil change establishment or a mechanic They "See em comin`" a mile away.

I think Doc may disagree with you on that one. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

$180 at the BMW dealer; and they say it with a straight face. Filter insert is about $7, oil is another $32 (8x$4). Takes me all of an hour.

I actually stand around and watch em take the old oil out, remove filter, install new and add oil.

I check, check, check.
