Sittin' here inna garage I heard an "unusual" aircraft aloft. BIG sounds, like radials... multiple radials. NAAAH!

Ran outside and looked skyward to see the underbelly of a shiny (HUH?!?!)B-17!!! Just at the 500 ft. limit, I could see the tail art. THAT don't happen every day. Gonna hunt it down in a bit. At a small airport a couple miles down th' road, it's the tour that beast is making. S'posed to be here for two days. Can't justify the fee for a ride but I can get some photos, certes.
 
Never been in a 17, but flew right seat in a 25. Great aircraft! Had a couple of rides in a 24. To visualize what it's like riding in a 24, put your head in a 55 gallon barrel and rattle a hand full of marbles in the bottom and if it's winter, dress for the antarctic. Evidently, heat was an unnecessary option! I guess they figured it would get hot enough in there with out it.
 
Indeed. Yep, it's the Collings guys. They allow you to "walk" thru the 17. Took a bunch of photos. Not enuff room in there t' swing a dead cat. Can't imagine bein' aircrew in one... Those guys had stones.

This same bird was at an air show at the AF base a few years ago but it was roped off there.

One of the crew of techs today knew where the P-38 wot used to be here in the area has gone. It's up your way, Steve. going thru the last stages of a total reconstruction. I may go back later or tomorrow and natter some more.
 
The P-38 is up here in Oshkosh? I'd like to see that.

The EAA had a Mosquito as well, but reputed to be not air-worthy and used as a static display. Not sure what its current status is. Now that was one heck of a war bird, the RAF flyers got up to some pretty hair-raising stuff in those.
 
I would love a 38. heard they were tough to handle.
 
The EAAs B-17 was here last summer. I went over at lunch time and took a tour inside it. The Wings Of Eagles/ National Warplane Museum here in Big Flats used to have the Fuddy-Duddy B-17 but wound up selling it off a few years ago. Now they want to sell thier PBY, and just concentrate on smaller aircraft. That's fine, but I miss the B-17 flying over every now and then.
 
They are rebuilding 1 of the first German jets in Everett by the big Boeing Plant,dang I can't remember what it is called. I think something happened the first test flight and they are rebuilding it. Would love to be part of that.

Wasn't that the FW 208?

I'm wrong, if it's a fighter their rebuilding. Could possibly be a twin engine Messerschmitt ME-262 "Schwalbe"! or "Swallow" in English. A very few were captured during the war. ???
 
doc, week befor last i spent some time in west palm beach i had the same thing happen to me when i looked up it was a p-51 about 600 feet buzzing the place i was staying at, what a great sound that engine makes

While out house hunting this weekend I was snapping some pictures of some of the places I'm considering - when this little cream puff flew over head.

Thrills me down to me toes.

The Collings fellas have a TA-4 and an F-4 too. Pony up $7K, get yer butt to Houston, go thru their egress and flight training course, then get to fly one!

naahhh. I'll have to settle fer rememberin'.

But I still have a couple old Nomex flight suits wot I can chicken-dance me paunchy self into. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I remember when I was stationed in Gitmo. in the 50s, we fitted these with radio control gear and used them for target drones. What a waist, what a sin. There's a bunch of them in the ocean at Gitmo. A bunch of hellcats also. Back then they were considered junk! Thinking about it today, kinda gives me a sick feeling.

Haven't had flight skins in a few decades - not sure what I did with my old flight suits but I gave my old issue leather G1 to my daughter a few years ago.

I gave all of mine away when they started to, ah, shrink?
