Just bought a new HP machine. Has mucho hard drive space, (600 gig), and over 2 gig of ram. My problem is with Vista. Is there any way around the security issue where you have to give permission for almost anything you do? It's an (OK) OP system if you don't mind not being able to use programs that will work on most older versions of windows, including XP. The graphics are nice, I guess I have to say something good about it. The security issues would be ok for an office machine where it's exposed to different users, but you should have the option of shutting down the programs you don't want. I just cant stand being told that I have to do this and I have to do that! I started with computers when windows 3.1 was just a dream and if this is the future in windows machines, the next one will be a Mac! Or even Linux. This is my last Vista OP system! PJ

mehheh... "I can't DO that, Dave..."

You can turn <LINUX> off the UAP (or ~whatever~ they call it!) someplace <LINUX> in the control panel. Only done <LINUX> it once so I don't remember the exact proceedure. Won't have Vista within <LINUX> a mile of th' hovel until I see the SP-2 release. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif <LINUX>

Why don't ya 'flatlilne' it and install XP Pro?

Aha, user account control. Hmm, gotta try it! I'm on my lap top now. At least I know how to use it. It has ME in it and NO problems. Took ME out of my other desk top and will put in another modem for Linux. I installed Fedora in it, you know, the little Penguin! Nice program, just won't recognize a win modem. Who ever invented these things anyway?

Re: I Also Need Some Computer Help! Windows Vis

My Kid bought a new laptop with vista on it, YEP wouldnt you know it! It wasnt a week and the dang thing got sick {Viri} I finally got it sorted out by doing a factory restore. But this I can say about it. Vista! NOT ME, NOT ANYTIME SOON!! And probably NOT EVER!!
Ill stick with XP PRO until it becomes what win 95 is now.
If I was computer savy enough to move to linux Id already be there, Iv tried it, but the file structure makes NO sense to me what so ever. {I know dumb} Dont rub it in please.
All I know about vista is, if you havnt reset the password to the administrator access try administrator { My kid hadnt changed his luckily.}

I like Linux and your right, the file structure is something to be desired.

The problem is, most of us have used windows over the years and we know most, if not all of the routes to take to get where we want. In Linux, everything changes and we have to retrain ourselves to that format. Tough? Yup! But ask yourself this,
rolleye0010.gif
if you had to start using DOS over again, could you do it without retraining? Even though I understand DOS better than windows, It would take me some time to get back in the swing of things. But that would be like getting out of a Mustang and jumping into a Model "T", or a horse and buggy!
