When preloading lifters, I prefer using a lighter grade oil, such as 5 or 10 weight. It's easier to pump into the lifter as some have smaller holes than others. The oil will quickly disperse with the break in oil on first run up.
Speaking of lifters, I had a Ford Ranger pickup once and a bad feature, if you wish to call it that, of the Ford Ranger 4 cyl, was that the holes in the Hyd. lifters were so small, that the use of 30 weight oil would cause them to pump up while driving above 55 MPH and shut the engine down. After setting for 30 seconds, the engine would restart. Couldn't use over 20 weight oil in it. Only stuck 30W in it as we used 30W SHD diesel oil in everything. It was the only vehicle that complained!
I was thinking that ATF might work well for preloading the lifters, and smearing some assembly fluid on the face of the lifters. These are for my Rangie, but I think that the lifters are pretty generic.
The lifters went in fine. No problems, but a couple of them I had to grasp with a pair of channel locks to completely remove, but the new ones slid right in.
