Hungry electical gremlins and dumb question

The other day my signal lights went out and last night I decided to chase down the problem. I am a total novice when it come to cars, but I figured how hard could it be to follow the wires and check the connections?
Well, in my car I've had most of the work done and a one point a decision was made to put the flashers through a toggle switch on the dash instead of the steering wheel - so I started at the switch followed the wires through the firewall where I found them to be completly sheared off. I am guessing that they must have got tangled somewhere and yanked - either that or something munched them. Perhaps the latter since last year the same thing happened to an aftermarket temp gauge line...
So here is the dumb question - where should i look for the other end of the wire? The headlights are working, but the break lights are not - related? I do have a new wiring harness that was installed last year...
thanks,
Kerry
On the up side, i drove it in to work today and it is a spectacular 70F and sunny - this is huge for us since it snowed in Ottawa last weekend!
