HS 2 carbs

I have on my 70 midget twin SU's. ON the rear carb there a hose going from the carb to the 'cannister' under the water pump. The front carb does not have a hose or even a fitting to attach one. While doing some research I found this picture from a 78 midget. It shows both carbs with a hose that is plugged. There is no cannister either. my question is, is there any harm in leaving the rear carb connected, or can I plug this as well, but if I do what do I do with thehose to the canister. By the way what does the cannister do?

The cannister collects and traps fuel and engine oil vapors so that they can be sucked into the carb and burned instead of released into the evironment.

I am not familiar with your set up, so hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in, but the hose is probably the purge line. I think you are better off leaving it connected, but you may want to "rebuild" your ELC cannister. It's a pretty cheap and easy process that you can read about here:

hi, thanks for the comment but no this is not charcoal cannister, here is a pic of my setup. The cannister is the green one just to the right of the yellow fan with no hose attached at the moment the picture was taken. does this help??

Woodie! Didn't we go through this before? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

First, a '78 is a totally different engine.

The cannister you are referring to is the oil seperator for the timing cover vent. The engine is designed to have a vacuum source there. This keeps your crankcase pressure negative that helps prevent oil leaks, esp at the rear scroll crank seal. Your carbs are mismatched. If it were me, I'd buy a set up rebuildable SU's (that are like your rear carb) and rebuild them using a good manual as a guide. Then your Y-pipe would connect as it is supposed to and the carbs would be easier to balance.

Aha,, thanks Trev, yes I thought I had asked before. Just so much info absorbed lately. Thanks. I will keep my eye out for a set of HS 2's,

Don't spend big bucks on them. In fact, you may post a message here that you need a set and someone may have a pair. But you should get a set with those ports. There are other ways to configure an intake system, but I think your simplist option is to find a set of appropriate carbs and rebuild them. (that was the route I chose)

You may also try posting at spritespot.com . There are a few people that post there, but not here. Oh, and www.mgcars.org.uk has a spridget BBS as well. I use all three sites, as do several other midget owners.
