I have a 1959 TR3A that I just got a few weeks ago. The valve cover has HRG Engineering Company Ltd, Chessington,
Surrey. Why would this be on the car? Is this the same company that made HRG cars? The engine number is a little off from the commision number but is still the same year, 1959. Thanks for any information. You can see it at the link below.

The engine numbers are always slightly higher then the commision numbers (usually by several hundred, depending on the year)because some of the engines went elsewhere. Morgan comes to mind, and I'm sure there were others.

Actually, you can't even count on this. On my TR4 the engine number is lower (and confirmed correct by the BMIHT build cert). Strange things could and would happen when the inventories of engines and bodies built up (not always FIFO).
 
Very often a company in the tuning business like Downton, Sid Hurrell, Lawrencetune, Derrington etc. would fix a label like that to the valve cover to show they had done some work on the car, usually porting and compression ratio.
It seems from the link that HRG stopped making cars in 1956 but stayed in business till 1960 probably doing this type of work.
In some cases these companies cast their own cams or even complete cylinder heads, so you have a nice little bit of unusual history for the car.
