How Were You Christened?

let's see here... I think my ~very~ first was at the age of 17 (or was it 16? hmmmmm) on a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina. Mom and her BF were in a full-size Chevy pick-up, and I followed them the entire way in a '80 Dodge Charger 2.2. Made the drive all the way into town without any trouble. We made the last stop for gas before heading to my Aunt's and Uncle's place, and while at the gas station, I discovered 3 things: 1) the fuel pump protection posts (you know the steel sleeved cement filled bright yellow posts they put in so people don't run over the pumps) were below my window lines in that car (about a foot lower than the window to be precise), 2) I pulled in ~really~ close to the pump and could not see said posts from inside the car, and 3) I had turned too sharply too soon while attempting to leave the pump. I put a nice big dent in the quarter panel behind the driver door. Didn't bother to get the insurance company involved or anything, because I was the only car involved in that stupid accident. Never bothered to get it fixed either.

The first accident I ever had that involved more than one car happened when I was 18. I was driving a '80 Dodge D-50 (the re-badged Mitsubishi truck), following a friend to the beach or some other summer non-sense, and found myself having to make an emergency stop because someone decided to stop on one of the busiest streets in town to let someone out of a parking lot. I made my stop successfully without hitting the rear of my friend's '79 Trans Am (barely), but the poor guy driving the County Natural Gas Service truck (full-size Chevy with work-box bed) wasn't as lucky. He nailed me pretty good. The hit shifted the back of my truck about a foot toward the left lane. Luckily, I was still holding onto the brakes hard when he hit me. So, I didn't get pushed into the car in front of me. No one got hurt, and the county paid to make the repairs to my truck.

was,nt driving, sat in back seat, on our way back from families house in lymington, to so'ton, going through new forrest, doing 50mph, a officer was going other direction, going 70mph, his car crossed cental white lines, hit almost head on. headbutted metal post where seat belt fixes, 36 stiches, fractured skull, head size of medicine ball next day.happened on xmas day aswell.still remember it like it was last week.only accident i've been in.

i was 17 years old while driving home after a night of partying fell asleep behind the wheel of my 356-b hitting the rear of a parked chevy impala (blue) the impact was so great it broke the pan of the 356-b under the seats collapsing the car in the middle, woke up with several people on each side of the car holding it up and another ontop of the engine compartment lifting me out from under the steering wheel by my arm pits, got away with a small scratch on my left ankle when it rubbed on the clutch pedal as i was being extricated, hard way to learn a lesson, i should not have survived, very, very lucky young man. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Never had a real serious “car” accident, but I have had a couple of finder benders. The worst was back in the late 70’s while I was in the Marines. I was doing about 35 on the main road back to base just outside Jacksonville NC in my 67 Barracuda. It was kind of late and raining when some num-nut “drunk” in the next lane decided he wanted to pull in front of me to get to the McDonalds on the other side of the street (had the munchies’ I guess). Steering to avoid I lost traction and my backend broke loose and came around & smacked the other car’s rear bumper. Damaged the right rear quarter panel from just after the C pillar to the rear tail light. The cops showed up and arrested the guy for DUI. But because he was drunk – his carrier refused to pay for my damages. I spent the next seven months fighting to get this arse-wipe pay me so I could fix my car, but luckily he was in the service too so I was able to track him down. The guy actually refused to work with me so I actually had to go through this guy’s chain of command to get him to pay but I did get my car fixed. God I still get PO'd when I think about it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

A buddy was learnin' me to drive before I was
old enough. I backed his mom's car into his
dad's car and broke his dad's headlamp.

We had to scurry around and get a replacement
fast!! His dad had an evil temper and big belt
and was not against using it on human flesh.

To this day I alway look 4 times before I back up!!
