Here's one happened to me and the Mrs.

We live in a small gated community with two high ranking
politicos as neighbors. 24/7 security. Guys with no necks
and things sticking out their ears and packin' 9mm heat.

It is not all that unusual to see a police helicopter
hovering high in the air over our community.

But one night late, we thought we'd been invaded the
helicopter noises were so loud. When we got up for breakfast,
our pool was covered with a thick slick of oily exhaust
residue. One of the 'copters must have been down low and
directly over our pool.

It took all day to clean out that mess.

What's been yer experiences?

They were looking for the gasoline you are illegally storing in buckets in your garage.

Don't know 'bout that but...............

the armored SUVs are sure black and the guys with
no necks wear only black.

On the plus side- we've had zero crime rate in the hood
for the past 25 years. One of the politicos baby sister
and her husband live across the street. Fine by me.
A nice young couple. Well mannered.

And the police chorus visits our hood and sings Christmas
caroles in full dress uniforms.

"tain't too bad.
Sure beats having a popstar for a neighbor.

In my youth many years ago that's what was left over after they sprayed to control mosquitoes- made it impossible for the larvae (SP?) hatched from their eggs to live.... Seems kinda early in the year for that, though... and I'm sure that sortof pest control isn't allowed any more... or is it?
 
Take it from someone that has worked on almost every type of military Copter there is, If they are leaking copious amounts oil of any sort {enough to leave the ground or water covered} there in serious trouble. The only oil they could leak would be gearbox oil or hydrolic oil. In either case the pilot would be looking for an L.Z. in short order.
Intentionally Spraying an oil or an oily substance, as in crop dusting would be entirely possible. But for what purpose would be hard to determine.
As for the "Black Colored" helos, I`v never personaly worked on one or even seen one.
Thats not to say I havn`t done repair work on engine components from 'Black" helos if there is such a critter.
Doing component work, it`s hard to tell what branch of service or what the color combination or even what model as far as that goes. As many military Helos use the same engine configuration. Generaly the G.E. T-700 series { there are several different configurations of this engine but all based on the T-700 Gas turbine engine}.
Other than the Chinook Ch-47 and it has the G.E. T-55 gas turbine, Which is physically much larger in size.
And the Uh-1 Huey { no longer in service in the U.S. } it has the G.E. T-63 { little tiny thing Physicaly } compared to the T-700 and the T-55.

The 'copter was over our house for maybe 30-45 minutes,
in a hover. I guessed the oily mess on my pool surface
was from exhaust gases. The stuff did not appear to be
oil like out of a can. It was more like soot from a
kerosene lantern.

It was also on the garden plants and concrete decking.
Actually, most of our backyard was dusted with the oily,
black crud.

And NO.....I did not attempt to remove it with
my pool filter system.

Maybe it was a British helicopter....they probably are supposed to leak oil. Were the lights kinda blinkin' on and off, too?

Yes, the military helos burn Jp-8 a kind of kerosene/gasoline and other chemical component mixture for fuel. I had a friend that ran one of the test cells, { where they pre run these engines before instalation }. They typicaly run an engine on and off for about four to six hours, heavily loaded on a dyno. Some of this time is at W.O.T.. The exaust stack is atop the buliding, maybe 30 ft in the air. I have never seen soot or oily substance on the ground near the stack. But then we are talking about a newly refurbished engine too, tuned and adjusted for maximum preformance. I suppose an engine that was running fat {rich} could emitt some Jp-8 carbon soot/residue.
And I have certainly witnessed this Jp-8 soot inside of some of the exaust ducting I have repaired, it is lightly oily but mostly sooty and if you get it on your hands it is rather hard to completly remove.
30 to 34 minutes hoover time, didn`t it drive you nuts?
I know the whirl tower across the street from where I worked drove me crazy. {where they tested the refurbished rotorwings via an electric motor, they would spin those blades for hours and hours on end, changing the pitch of the blades testing for flaws. This testing of these blades made racket you could hear for quite a distance. No motor sound whatso ever, just the sound of the blades poping the air.
My best guess is that what got on your property was just that Kerosene/ Jp-8 soot
 
Mostly known only by my close friends, I am a commercial helicopter pilot with, let's say, more than a few hrs in one. Lost a rotor shaft on landing once, made quite a mess. Oh well, unless it's a crime scene or emergency rescue, any pilot who knowingly flys a chopper close enough over private property to lay JP residue on a swimming pool, especially that close to a private residence, is in violation of more FAA rules than than you can think of, regardless of who owns it! You could have it stopped, it's just how far do you you want to go.
 
It was a police or Homeland Security 'copter and
rest assured it's loud noise drove us nuts the entire time.

Well, knowing that, the boys who sometimes fly the black box in the dark usually are on a special mission and security is their specialty. It might be annoying at times, but we need their services. Their brave people and thank goodness we have them looking out for us.
 
Paul, over the years id maintained/rebuilt copters and have done many engine runs in such but Ive never seen any of them displace any type of soot or residue whatsoever, i also live in the flight path of the Sikorsky plant and have had up to 8-10 in formation fly over my house, they are all painted black, every time they go by my wife will ask "what did you do this time?" i actually have a few minutes stick time in a bolkow 105, nice ship. tinster is a very, very talented person but i dont think really a mech. too bad cuz all hed have to do is show them that little screw on the side of the linkage ya know the one used to "lean" out the fuel mixture. :jester:

To be perfectly honest, the only time I've personally seen fuel vapor coming from a turbine is on a wet start, never on a hot engine. But, there could possibly be a slightly leaking fuel line or whatever. Fuel cap not sealed properly. Just one drop of JP floating in a swimming pool would spread and look like a lot more. It's amazing just how far a drop or two will spread on water.
