i was wondering how some of you turn over the engine when checking valve clearances. i can't put a socket on the main pully with the frame in the way. is there an easier way than rolling the car in gear?

thanks,
john

sure cholk the front wheels, jack up one rear tire and turn that, Helps if you remove the plugs from the engine. BE SAFE

Just make sure it is in gear...! Also, with the plugs out, you may be able to turn it over by pulling at the fan belt while holding all the slack out.

John, I just pull the plugs and turn it over with the alternator pulley, while maintaining tension on the belt, as Guinn suggests. Occasionally I may have to use a wrench on the pulley nut, but not often.
One advantage to this method is that you are able to watch the valves while turning the engine over, which is hard to do if using the rear wheel.
