How to stow a BJ8 top

The rear plastic windows are so easily scratched and care must be taken to avoid that.

What process do BJ8 owners use to stow the top, so as to protect the window?

If possible, let the car sit in the sun a little to soften up the top and rear window.

1. Unlatch the two windscreen clamps
2. Unzipper the rear window
3. Lay a large microfiber towel in the cavity
4. Push the rear window in the cavity.
5. Lay another microfiber towel over the window, now protecting both sides.
6. Lower the top into the cavity.

Anyone have a quicker, safer, easier way?

Seems like a lot of trouble to me. Why do you have to unzipper the back window?

It is however, very important to install the U shaped furry strip (like what goes under the dash) on the upper top bar that should protect the rear window. That's the original method BTW.

Re: How to store the rear window BJ8

The back window is unzipped so the top can be folded down without putting a crease in the plastic.

Back when I had a BJ8,.,.what you are doin was pretty much standard procedure.

I don't think that the BJ8 has the same fixing bar on the upper top, unless it is a hang over from the BJ7s on the early BJ8s. They changed it for a U shaped channel only without the trimmings.

Re: How to store the rear window BJ8

Thanks Bob, I thought all convertibles have some sort of U shape channel at this point. If you carefully let-down the top and observe the top bars it will contact the plastic rear window, either zipped or unzipped, and if the top bar isn't covered could scratch it.

Re: How to store the rear window BJ8

I tried the towel, but it took up too much space and the top would not go down far enough. I lowered mine about six weeks ago and have not raised it since.

Re: How to store the rear window BJ8

Bill, what kind of a towel was it?

Here's a LINK to the towel I am using. It's the larger Cobra Gold Plush XL Microfiber Towel, 25 x 36 inches in the photo. It's from Autogeek.

Maybe your towel was too thick? Bath and beach towels for instance are much thicker than a microfiber towel.

Mabye your top just doesn't have enough wiggle room to put any towel there. My top is tight, and I have to give it a bit of a push when it gets to the rain channel.

Cheers,
Roger
