how to restore hardware? and paint gun ?

In the middle of a frame off restoration. The DPO was the king of undercoating and overspray. How do you recommend restoring all of the hardware. Strip it then leave raw till painted body color? any advice is welcome.

I would like to do what is correct but all the parts are bagged and labled as to where they go. I fear throwing them all in one bag for replateing etc. and then trying to figure out where they go again.

Also for any of those adventurous to try painting the tub yourself, what type of paint gun are you using.

Check out the "car care" forum thread on the caswell nickel plating kit. I think I gotta get me one.
As for the gun. I use a gravity fed HVLP gun. Actually mine was a generic one that I borrowed.(and it performed quite well) but devillibus and Binks are probably two of the best known brands.
Using the HVLP means you can use a smaller compressor and it will keep up because you are running much less pressure. and it also eliminates a good amount of overspray.

You could take digital photos of the parts w/labels. Not a bad idea anyway if only to see if you got everything back from the plater.
 
Though this would take quite a lot of patience, you could use one of those vibrating engravers to put a number on the "tip" of each bolt and bottom side of each nut in your multiple bags of parts. If you keep a ledger of the numbered fasteners you'll know which bag they came out of.

I used a generic, siphon feed gun that is a copy of a Binks. I've had good luck with that but am very curious about the HVLP guns. I've heard both good and bad things about them and the only thing I can conclude is that which type works for you... is what you learned with.

Banjo, can you add any comments about your HVLP gun? Were you pleased with it's performance compared to a siphon feed gun? Had you used a siphon fed gun previously? What type of paint were you spraying and does the HVLP gun require anything different when mixing the paint?

An additional brand you may find at the auto paint store is Sharpe. I don't know if they're any good but they are well represented... at least around here.
 
Doug, Sharpe makes an excellent gun. I've got a couple of theirs, as well as a Binks and a DeVilbis. I think I use the Sharpes more than the others.
All are siphon feed. I was going to buy a Sharpe HVLP, but had no paint project going to really justify it.

The HVLP gun I used was one that was in a multi-pack from Lowes. I sprayed Omni AU base-clear urathane. As far as I know there is no difference in the mix ratios for standard vs HVLP guns. both standard and HVLP guns can be purchased in either siphon or gravity feed styles. I personally like the gravity fed type. there seems to be fewer problems.
Knowing that the one I used was a cheapie, it performed very well. although I would like to get a nicer one for my next paint job (hopefully the TR2).
Switching to an HVLP takes some practice. They tend to give more orange peel until you get the technique down. But they are more efficient than the old type. This means that your paint will go further, since you're not turning as much of it into overspray.
Sharpe is definatly a good brand. My apologies, I knew I was going to butcher the name DeVilbis (and I did).

I've been looking at the Sharpe "Titanium" gravity feed HVLP. I don't really have an immediate use for it, but the thing just feels so nice, I've pretty well convinced myself I need one. Of course, then I would have to have a second one, just for clear..............
