how to replace rear main seal in 1500 midget

I have a garage replacing the rear main seal in the 1978 MG Midget. Do they usually remove the engine or transmission to do this?
Thanks.

They would need to remove both as a unit, and then separate them to get to the rear main seal. I do not think there as any other way.

Before you get into that, check to make sure that your engine case is getting plenty of ventilation. 1500's gotta breath or it will [censored] oil all over the place in protest.

Also, there is a scroll seal on the front of the transmission which likes to leak if you even slightly overfill the gearbox.
