how to remove windshield wiper motor.

I've checked both the repair manuals I have and neither one of them says more than remove the nut and remove the motor.

I also did a search on this forum and there is no mention of it that I could find.

I removed the nut, the cable still will not come out of the motor. What am I missing? How do I get the wiper motor to let go of the cable?

2 options

1. take the wiper arms off and pull the cable out with the motor
2. take the cover plate off the wipe gear housing and lift the cable nub out of the gear.

To just remove the motor, take the cover plate on the motor unit off (4 screws) and then lift the end of the cable off the inner fitting. You don't want to pull the cable from the wiper racks UNLESS you have to.

I agree that removing the entire cable is messy, but it is easy and gives you an opportunity to clean the old grease off and apply some fresh grease.

Having just done moved the location of my wiper motor to accomodate an updated pedal box, putting fresh grease on dramatically improved the wipers performance.

It went from laughingly slow, to dramatically slow!!
Don't forget the Rain-X.

I'm going to clean the old grease out of the motor and replace it with new as well. The old grease was pretty bad.

Just completed a complete tear down / clean / repaint / refinish / reassemble on the wiper motor. It looks like new now and is packed with loads of fresh white lithium grease. The brushes on the motor were only slightly worn and the big nylon gear looked new. Overall great shape!

I'm reading through some of the posts on wiper motor removal. There are some good tips; I think I'll remove the motor only (this time) I need to use the car soon and driving without wipers is probably going to draw some attention. I could probably remove the cable only but...oh wait who am I kidding who could possible get a socket on those nuts - imagine putting it back in. I've got the bolts out of the mounting bracket (9/16 I think) and when I return from the chiropracter, I'll crawl, inverted, back under the dash and remove the motor.
Anything I need to know?
I hope, somewhere there is some online help on rebuilding the motor, mine has a dead short to the casing (could be toast) .

Peter it looks like you have and MGB - and you are asking in the Spridget forum. You are describing the motor as being under the dash but for us it is on the inner fender under the hood (bonnet) You may want to ask about installation tips in the MG forum.

The advice about not pulling the cable is spot on. Also 90%+ of wiper issues are directly related to dried grease. when you have the motor out clean and re-grease (it will be obvious)

The last 5% is related to brushes. You can buy a brush assembly that looks like this:

I can't find a part number but it is 100 times easier than replacing the brushes yourself - don't ask me how I know.

My shop partner has a MGB and yours is much harder to deal with. I believe he removes the glove box to get access to the wiper motor. And I agree, do not pull the cable.
