How to paint from start to finish

Okay team;
I have a few weeks off following some big exams and am going to, I hope paint the car (1971 MGB: still haven't decided on the colour although BRG is up there on the list). I would like any advice from type of paint to how many coats to when to sand.
From what I can tell so far, I put on a coat or two of primer, several coats of lacquer and then clear coats. I sand after and or between the clear coats and then put on some sort of shining compound and then buff it to that gleaming shine (i hope).
Thanks in advance,
Matt

I went to Barnes and Noble bookstore and bought one of those "How To Paint Your Hot Rod" books....looked through a bunch of them before I found one I liked.

Another option is to look at various web pages on the subject (as you'll see by clicking on the web page below, your question can not be explained with a simple, short answer.....prepare to do quite a bit of reading!) Good luck!
