How to get dead animal odor out of interior

I'm thinking of purchasing a MGB and the owner stored(deposited) the car in a garage about 5 years ago and never bothered to check on it. Upon opening the garage, we found that a raccoon had gotten into the interior compartment and died about 6 months ago. Needless to say, the interior smells terrible. We tried to air it out, but I know that I have to do alot more. Does anyone know how to get the smell out of the carpeting and seats without replacing them. Is there any powder or sprays that will take the smell out.

if you know and i'm assuming you do where the animal decayed (last laid) try pouring a 1/2 cup white vinegar on the area then brush in,and several boxes(2-3) of baking soda (arm and hammer) over the vinegar in the immediate area. it will fizz and fizz. let it sit for a few days, to dry out, then vacuum well. you might have to do it several times. then get a can of OZIUM odor eliminator in the blue and white spray can(walmart carries it , so does autozone) and spray the area and the rest of the carpet till damp. let that dry. you should be good to go.
i had the same problem except i had a squirrel,
and my recipe worked.

Thanks for the advice,I posted this same message on several forums and you were the first one that gave me hope without having to have to replace all the carpeting. If I do buy this MGB, I'm going to try your suggestions first thing and I'll let you know if it works. thanks again
 
Try rubbing some limburger cheese on the spot. That will mask the smell of the dead animal...but Try XJr's methond first

It might get rid of the smell, but I'd still opt for new carpets. Knowing a raccoon had croaked on my floors would give me the willies....

ah lets see, as for basils suggestion ( which made me chuckle) you would have to contend with the smell of the limburger cheese, which wouldnt
be so bad if you had some onion slices and crackers as well as a few pints of a fine english ale. as for williams suggestion, replacing the carpets entirely due to the fact that a dead raccoon was there and it would create the willies
heres my reply: most of the british cars we drive
average around 20+ years old. lots of children
might have been conceived in these old cars not to mention the fact that many of us might have had some kind of sexual encounter in these cars.
(these cars have made it through the 60's and 70's
remember!)
just knowing the fact that my parents (long gone now) or anyone else that might have bumped ugly in
in a car i drive is enough to give me the willies!!! to heck with the dead raccoon!!
use my method to remove the odor and save your money for gas and not for new carpeting. just enjoy driving your british car as much as you can and you will forget about its previous occupants.

Reminds me of an incident that happened to a construction office trailer of ours. One of the guys, for reasons that we haven't figured out to this day, smeared Limburger cheese in an overhead electric heater on Friday evening. The heat was on all weekend. When we returned on Monday, the smell in the trailer was so bad, we moved into another trailer. We used everything possible to get rid of the smell, but to no prevail. Thank goodness the trailer was a rental. We sent it back, got a replacement and never heard anything about it since. Believe me, cooked Limburger is not a pleasant smell!

A few years ago, I had some pork stew spill inside my van - the pot just sloshed - it wasn't even a big spill - and I cleaned it promptly. It took 3 years of odor sprays and carpet cleaning to really get rid of the smell and even then on hot days I could smell it. I'd budget for new carpet
 
If what is described above doesn't work, PM me. I know of a product that will eat the odor and eliminate it. Quantities would be the biggest stumbling block.
It has no strong scent itself, and will not harm the carpet.
 
Anyone conceived in a BE either had midgets, contortionists or masters of the Kama Sutra for parents!!!
 
On the bright side if you leave the car as is no one will ever steal anything out of it. Think of it as a very potent passive car alarm.
 
We had a dead guy that sat in the car for 30 days we had to tow for HP , wow we had to get a funeral guy to give us some formaldihide to bear the smell of the car in the back impound ,,, man what a stink . Heres another >> We just went to the hunting camp we had put mouse death food out one little mouse smelled up the place like PEE PEE freakin little mouse . Ditch all the carpet and interior or just carry a mega jug like you get from the jiffy store of urine around to mask the smell .
 
10 pounds of baking soda, dump it on the carpet, let sit for days, and repeat

baking soda removed the smell of rotten fish out of a cooler that set for a month

A few years back a fairly new Cadillac was found in the woods with a dead body in it. It was in there quite a while. After the police investigation and determining the guy committed suicide, the car was put up for auction. It smelled so bad, they couldn't give it away. A junk yard took possession of the car and stripped it for parts. I understand that they could never get rid of the smell inside, even after it was completely stripped and after burning it they sent it to the crusher.
 
As a former funeral home employee (13 years), I DO NOT recommend brething formaldahide fumes... beside being a strong Cancer causing agent, it will also cause resperatory problems if breathed in large doses.

I will recommend replacement of the carpet and/or seat materials the little bugger was resting on (anything that the liquified parts got onto). And rubbing everything including the bare metal in the immediate area with cheap coffee grounds (not instant coffee). I keep an old can of cheap coffee here to wipe my hands in after chopping onions and garlic. Works instantly on removing garlic smells off your hands... Should work on other bad/strong odors also.
 
or - contact a fire restoration company and see what they use - though replacing the carpet especially since it likely needs replacing anyway will probably be cheaper
 
The Vinegar/baking soda thing will work well... I've had to do it many times... Ozium then gives the car a pleasant aroma....
 
Didn't the Mythbusters do an episode where they put a dead pig in a Corvette for 30 days, inside a metal trailer, in the sun, and then tried to remove the smell?
