How to dispose of a car. Advice Please.

Baz, the Rabbit goes to its new home on Friday (I hope). After looking into the online charities and talking to a couple of people who used them to dispose of cars... I decided to sell/give the Rabbit to a small European car repair shop near me. They are the only shop that has worked on the car in the past 17 years. I've done all my own work but turned to them when an emission component died. It took them 8-10 hours to troubleshoot the problem but they only charged me for 1.5 hours total including the repair. I feel I owe them something and giving them the car will make me feel good while getting rid of my problem.

That's gotta be some sort of ~accelerated~ rust! I've never seen anything go to red lace faster'n an Alfa or Fiat.

Although I have to agree, as my Fiat 850 seemed to turn colors before my eyes. I've never owned anything that rusted faster than my 89 Geo Tracker. You could literally listen to it rust on a quiet night.
That's the last time I buy a car from an employee of a salt mine!!!!
I coulden't keep up patching that thing...

As of 10/6/06 the Rabbit has gone to a new home. As mentioned in a previous post we sold the car (for the price of a family sized pizza) to the only local mechanics who have ever worked on the car. The mechanic who took the car said that his plans are to drive the car for a while. That suits me fine.

As a lesson to others, if you don't want to sell your car to the crusher (by the pound) plan on disposing your non-collectible cars before they reach 10-15 years of age. Even charities are picky.
 
I was already taking a lot of guff from family about the number of cars we own. When we had the Rabbit, there were 5 cars for 2 drivers. Four were parked on the driveway and the Mini got the garage.

My wife had an accident 18 months ago and replaced her small, older, Honda van with a 2005 Toyota van. I have a vintage milling machine that takes up about 6 feet of floor space at the back of the garage. The Toyota is SO long that with the mill in the garage I can't even contemplate parking the van there. So, the Mini continues to get primo parking.

I'm not quite ready for another project. A couple of years ago I toyed with the idea of building a LoCost-7 and started researching it. Then I decided... maybe for a while I should put that money towards a college fund for the kids. Oh well, the kids should be through college in a decade and retirement's only 19 years away (not that I'm counting).

On the other hand, I plan on keeping mine alive until it comes out of fully depreciated mode and starts becoming a classic too.

I thought the photo was amusing because both my cars have "L" year registrations: the Jensen Healey OEA 724 L for 1972, the Peugeot L 357 TGE for 1993....

Lots of places sell them. But if you're not too concerned about they're being legal for road use in the UK you might consider Holden. They sell the plates and the adhesive numbers to go on them- the plate is ÂŁ1.82 = ÂŁ.42 per letter or number. So something like N 1 GEL (Nigel) would cost a grand total of ÂŁ3.92 plus tax and shipping... if that's the sort of thing you're wanting. Most of the others do more permanent plate with embossed or laminated plates (and more expensive, may be ÂŁ20/25? I don't really know) - see Europa Auto Spares but British regualtions now require documentation to buy plates- though they'd probably be less stringent for an export order....

Triple C Motoring accessories sells them as well and they will imprint them with anything that you want. I had one made up to match the issued Colorado plate and have it on the front of my TR6. Legality is sort of gray but it has passed several tests including one by the stictest traffic code enforcement officer in town. Colorado does require both front and rear plates but nice/unusual cars seem to be able to get away with out front plates for the most part.

Over the summer, I bought a parts car (Mercedes 450 SLC).
After stripping it, I had the same problem. Actually, I
had a bigger challenge because I wanted to keep the front
and rear suspension.

My solution was to cut it up, and haul the pieces to
a local scrap metal recycle yard. I used a Harbor
Freight anle die grinder with 4" cutoff blades.
Took me a couple of days and about 10 blades.

Kinda fun, with the added bonus that I got to see
how the 450 SLC was built (like a friggin tank!).
I had never done this before, and I'll do it next
time I have a hulk to dispose of rather than pay

Cutting up the Rabbit would have ended in divorce or worse. This was my wife's first car. She purchased it with her own money when she was just out of high-school. I wouldn't have dared to go to sleep at night.

Ironically, when I got home last night the new registration papers and license plate for the car were on the kitchen table. We'd paid the fees online prior to selling the car. I hope I can get some of that money back!

Relax Tony. The '72 450 SLC I cut up was so rusty it
was beyond any possiblity (for a sane person) of
repair. Plus, I now have a huge stash of parts for
my 350 SL and 450 SLC, which was the goal. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
 
Sad truth is most salvage yards wont take anything old these days. Rabbits seem thin these days - Id put a ad in a local trader paper as a running parts car. Some VW nut might even save it.
 
Luckily, I've a friend who owns a salvage yard...I drag the old carcasses up on my trailer with the winch...he lfts them off with forklift & tosses them on top of a stack to be crushed...but, I remove gas tank, etc before taking to him.
