How organized are your tools?

Geez!! I'd be terrified to move anything on there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I nearly always put the tools back in the box or rack at the end of the day.Don't have enough space to do anything else really. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Here's how organized mine are... But I know exactly where each tool is... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm semi-organized. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Due to a lack of space I built my own tool cabinet/work bench. There's a place for everything, but... while I'm working not everything finds its place at the end of the day. Once a specific job is done (or the tools start getting in the way of progress) things go back where they belong. And once a month or so I have a little rummage around and make sure everything's really where I meant for it to end up, and clean again.

Seems to work... I can pick up on jobs quickly when I've a little time, and still know where what I need is, when I need it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

The only trick is resisting the urge to try and do several things at the same time, then who knows? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nonono.gif

True, it looks good static... but does it sway from side to side when moving forward? In a pleasingly manner, of course.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

My shop is huge....so I have numerous large boxes...Craftsman..Snap-On...and others. All big..and all are full. As a retired AF aircraft mechanic I try to use the CTK system, everything has its place so if its missing you know right away. My air tools as well as the large electric stuff both have big rollawayy boxes with full swing out doors, are about the size of a Midget. Then I have an engine build room....everything is in neat rollaway boxes or shadow type boards. All this...and I still can't find anything. Im currently have four total body off restos going on VW bugs..one on a B roadster..a 65 Mustang hafl stripped and two Baja bugs nearing completion. After these are done, my shop will be strictly a hobby shop for my personal projects..no more customer service. I'm basically the last dinosaur left in the area that maintains VWs, the ols ones anyhow.

CTK?

Chance To Kill?

I doubt that's what you mean.

... but some people do feel that way about borrowers of their tools, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

and would want to know right away.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I seem to have found it now....

https://www.newequipment.com/303/ProductDetail/57362/frmProductDetail.aspx

"The new Stanley® Proto® Custom Tool Kitting program (CTK) offers two major benefits: It lets customers assemble the exact set of tools they need for their trade, and puts those tools in a storage system that makes it easy to confirm that each tool is returned to its proper place after use."

AND I got to learn another nice, new acronym too:

FOD. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Actually the Air Force started the CTK system back in the 70s, so many planes were getting damaged...or worse..from people leaving all kinds of tools and sometimes the old removed parts were left behind. The C stands for consolodated(sp). anyhow...all types of materials were used to shadow tools. Felt, rubber...liquid stuff poured into drawers of tools, left to set then carve out the tops to leave an insert for the tools. Pain in the butt plus they discovered that later on when the boxes were left in the sun...the stuff started reverting leaving your tools swimming in a gooey muck. Going to the system let the tool cribs(places tools were checked out from) scan the boxes in seconds instead of doing a tool by tool inventory.

My tool boxes are my last bastion of sanity around here: The rest of the hovel is chaos but my tools are clean and EXACTLY where they need to be. The next time I need one it's THERE. I hate chasing strays... and you get ONE chance at lend/lease... if it stays "gone" for too long, is dirty or damaged on return, "Game Over."... "Go buy yer own. You'll have it then."

Reminds me of one day this past week when I left a bag of Gummi Bears in my car. When I finally came out to my car later in the day, I found a bag of Gummi Goo /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif
