How not to make any money as a salesman

Banjo said:
An old salsman I used to work with told me of a time when he was working in a Mercedes dealer and in walked , for all visual refrences, a bum. He was looking over the cars, and clutching his wrinkled paper sack to his chest. My friend decided after a few minutes that he'd humor the guy and at leadt shuttle him out of the showroom with a little grace. They spoke for a few moments, then the "bum" stated, "Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. I'd like to buy that one." and handed my friend his paper sack. Filled with money.
Turns out it was all a tactic this guy used to find a salesman that he felt deserved to get his profit.
Hey, when your rich, you can afford to be weird like that.

That's not wierd; it's just a quick way to sort the wheat from the chaff..

That guy should have been fired on the spot for that one.

To set some balance on the other side, though, you do get EXCELLENT service quite often as well...

Yesterday I was looking for a very long audio cable to hook my new TV up to the stereo for sound, and went to the usual places, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc, and was annoyed by the cables with gold plating costing $50 or more with fancy packaging, that weren't long enough, and drew a blank.

On my way home I saw a Radio Shack in a low-rent strip-mall and thought heck, why not. I went in and a young African-American man with a smile two miles wide said, "Yes, sir, and how can we help you today."

I said I want an audio cable ... a long audio cable. He said, will 20 feet be enough? I said yes, I think so. He showed me the item, $7.99, but because of my apparent doubt he then proceeded to search diligently all over the store and in the back room, to see if they didn't actually have a longer one. He was unsuccessful but his enthusiasm and helpful attitude made my day, and I bought the 20 foot cable, all for $7.99.

I thanked the young man for the item AND for his great ATTITUDE.

I agree, sometimes it all balances out.(no pun intended)

i went today to buy some new tires for my subby, drove into the nearest place to where i work, an Interstate Tire. The place was dead empty, and 3 guys sitting around looking for something to do. the manager asked what i needed, i told him. He dissapeared for about 3 minutes and came back with a neatly written list of what he had available complete with prices. A short walk around the showroom and i made my choice, drove my car into the bay and all 3 guys decended upon it and the tires were removed and all 4 new ones mounted up in about 5 minutes flat.
Here is where i got my lesson for the day, the talkative gent that did the balancing gave my quite a lesson. Every tire he balanced he also checked for "hop". He explained to me that rims and tires are not all that round, if the tire had any run out he marked the high spot, and then marked the low spot on the rim, and then broke down the tire and indexed it till it ran true. Re-balanced it and checked again. this fella did all 4 tires until they all ran like glass, in fact he found one that wouldn't run straight, tossed it and got me another. I was duly impressed. thanked him and the manager as i payed and left with a smile. they will get more business from me.

You guys kill me, great stories. People wonder why I were a suit everyday to work and then a t shirt, work jeans and and untied work boots almost every place else I go (besides it is a heck more comfortable), you get to meet nicer people.

Good story, Mark.

For as bad as car salespeople can be, I actually had a good one with the latest car. I walked in on a Saturday afternoon on Memorial Day weekend, not realizing they would be closing early that day. The guy spent plenty of time going over the car and letting me test drive it, but he wasn't pushy. I hadn't planned on buying it that day, but he said they were having low interest for that weekend only, the one I test drove was exactly what I wanted, and he pointed out (correctly) that the old car was only going to be worth less and the new one would cost more if I delayed. He and the clerk stayed well after closing time to do the paperwork, answer my questions, and I didn't feel like they were trying to get me out of there quickly so they could leave. The only stumbling block we ran into was they couldn't find the floor mats for the one I drove, so they looked around the lot and ended up "borrowing" ones out of another car on the lot. They certainly left me wanting to go back to their place for future business, and the salesman actually called me up a couple days later to make sure I was happy with the car. I made sure to send a letter to the sales manager telling him the guy exceeded my expectations and that I'd certainly be happy to do more business with them.

Good one Dave! What did you end up buying?

Went in to the bank in the morning. There was a long line and the bank only had two windows open. A long wait.

Then I went to pay my cell phone bill and see if the Blue Tooth thingy that goes in your ear was still under warrenty. There was a bunch of people waiting for service. I saw the manager come out of the back look around and went back into the break room. Seconds later all of the sales associates came out and manned all the desks. All of the customers were handled in a matter of minutes. My rep came out with a brand new upgraded thingy and gave it to me no charge and with a smile. I made it a point ot stay a little long until all customers had left and thanked the sales force for great service. They were shocked someone noticed.

Well, don't expect to get any assistance at the US Air counters in the Frankfurt am Main airport before 10am....stood in a long line & watched all the employees take their morning coffee in front of us (apparently no break room) then they hooked up all the computers, set up the kiosks, piddled around &, finally, when 1 guy's watch said 10, they took customers....I mentioned that I needed to get checked in so I could take my wife to another terminal so she could get on her Air France to Paris & asked if they could hurry a bit - lady looked peeved & told me they opened at 10 & other airline flights weren't their problem. You don't want to know what I told her...later, the stewardess on the plane who had been told I was a troublemaker & asked me if I was going to be a problem for them also ("Only if your service is as crappy as the ticket counter service!").

I have been known to shout at the top of my lungs in a Walmart that I need help. Boy does that get attention.

Jet Blue SLC March. Same sort of deal - I thought it was only me that this sort of thing happened to.

I thought that the fact that they all just sat there right in front of a line with at least 100 people in it doing nothing for 45 minutes was the most aggravating part, until I realised that my ticket agent was being 'trained'...

I learned that the ticket counter talks to the aircraft crews....stewardess told me the captain didn't put up with problem passengers...I asked her what was he was gonna do halfway over the Atlantic if I decided to be a problem to which she had no answer (I think most people are intimidated by stewardesses/pilots/ticket counter personnel - heck, the entire airline industry)....we actually got along well when she finally realized I was only angry with the folks on the ground...she gave me the address of the CEO & I sent him a scathing letter (no answer!)

It's a 2004 Honda CR-V, and I got it at Mike Pruitt Honda in Akron. A couple of my coworkers bought Hondas from there too, and they've been happy with the service they got there. First Honda I've ever had, and no complaints.

Good choice! Did they have any Fits in stock, perchance? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Finally reading over this thread, and I've come to the conclusion that my mother uses the same tactics as a lot of you. She pays for her cars in full at the dealership, and she'll usually "dress down" for the occasion. Apparently, she's one heck of a negotiator as well... at least that's what I hear from the dealerships that know her.
