How "NOT" to make a simple cup holder -BJ8

If you desire a single cup holder in your Healey, here's an idea that may work for you.

Requirement is that your emergency brake lever in the off position, lays down completely. It must lay below the passenger seat cushion. For the cushion will keep the cup holder pressed against the transmission tunnel

This plastic single cup holder can be found at many auto department stores. It's adjustable by releasing a tab and sliding one end out. It will adjust to any size cup.

Of course, some modifications will have to be made to make it fit level over the emergency handle and fit snug between the top seat cushion and the transmission tunnel.

An extender with a v-shape at the bottom, will be glued into the bottom of the back end of the holder to make it level on the brake handle. The other end, front, will also have a v-shape piece glued that will rest on the front of the hand brake push button.

The front of the cup holder will also have a zip-tie that runs though it, in the shape of an 0-Ring. The zip-tie is made permanent in the shape of an 0-Ring. The bottom of the ring will slip around the emergency brake push button.

Installation and removal of the cup holder, about 10 seconds. When in place, the side of the cup will fit perfectly against the curve of the BJ8 transmittion and shift console

Attached are a series of photos that may help you visualize how to make and set up this cup holder.
Cheers, Roger

Roger, the color coordinated cup is a nice touch!

Re: How to make a simple cup holder -BJ8

Roger,
You obviously haven't yet had the experience of the clevis pin working loose and dropping out of the brake peddle assembly (nobody yet has admitted to failing to replace the cotter pin). This only happens when travelling down a steep hill at a minimum of 40 mph. In any event it may be necessary to toss the cup and holder out of the car quickly in order to reach the E brake handle.

Well yes that is inovative Roger, However. I do not recommend drivers impact access to the hand brake lever. That brake lever is all you have in the event that a brake sytem failure occurs.---Keoke-

Roger,

What happened with your pull out Volkswagen drink holder ?

E break is used to hold the car while starting on hill and using the clutch and gas pedals. (Hey, I grew up on the streets of San Francisco)

Re: How to make a simple cup holder -BJ8

I still like Keoke's original cup holder idea better. And they come in 3 colors, blond, brunette and redhead.

Though I realize that it really only applies to good looking guys like me and keoke. I was gonna get one for Anthony for his birthday, but the hourly price was too high. Next time, I won't show 'em a photo of Anthony first so I have some negotiating room.

Re: How to make a simple cup holder -BJ8

Sorry Roger, I still prefer the "wedgie" type I bought at Walmart for $5 bucks. It holds two cups and has a compartment for change/keys etc in the middle. It wedges between the seats and to the rear, clear of the brake handle.

Hi Ed,
I came up with this one, before I did the VW style.
Just thought I'd share this design.
Think freeway driving.

As mentioned above, good idea to make sure your car is not in need of repair, brake peddal cotter pin, brake handle push button, or any other safety items.

Cheers, Roger

Re: How to make a simple cup holder -BJ8

Like I said earlier Roger DON"T do it, it is dangerous and can not be justified.-----Keoke-- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonod.gif

Or, keeping the car running at a stop light, when cold, or misbehaving... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/blush.gif

Re: How to make a simple cup holder -BJ8

I apologize.
My bad guys.
Don't waste your time making this and for safety sake, don't use it.
Cheers, Roger

Hi Rodger Mo and I enjoyed meeting you and seeing your wonderful Healey last weekend. Have these critics not seen the hidden holder?

Re: How to make a simple cup holder -BJ8

I bought a VW style cup holder off of ebay for the foundation of my cup holder. I have not had the time to work on it yet.
