First post here.

A fellow contacted me a few weeks ago, with a BGT (I think' it's a '70) for sale.

I just received pictures of the car, and I wanted to get some "expert" opinions on how much I should offer.

A look at the license plate shows that this car probably hasn't had asphalt under its wheels in 20 years.

I intend to strip the car down, and do a partial restoration, before I try to put it on the road.

I'd have to travel 100 miles to inspect the car myself, so I'd rather decide beforehand, then just make a single trip down to pick it up.

What more should I ask the owner, to get a better idea of the condition of the car?

Oh and not to sound so harsh after your first post but welcome to the BCF. Cars like this are almost too far gone. If the floors and rockers are rusty then it's almost not worth it to try and save. You'ld be better off getting a better body in non running condition than this.
 
It's a '70 split bumper. It was made in the first half of 1970.

Depending on everything (under close inspection) it looks like it could make a parts car. I see a couple parts on it I'd like to have for mine... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

For comparison, my split bumper 70 BGT was running and had low miles on a professional rebuild of the engine and came with loads of NOS parts and I paid $800.
 
Oh, and although mine needs a bit of body work the floors are pristine. It came with parts to repair just about everything wrong with the body - even a new windshield and seal.

Definitely pass - but if the guy wants to sell some parts, please send him to me!

Welcome Aboard. In my opinion, that car is a goner. But would probably make a useful parts car. I would think no more that a 100 or so.
 
Okay, my opinion if somebody sent me those photos - & most everybody knows my history with and business with MG's.

I wouldn't even take the trip to look at it in person - I'd delete the photos & continue looking for a better example.

It might be a parts car & it might not...that car's been bastardized & abused & there's probably not very many parts on it that I don't already have on the shelf - & to sell any of the parts off it would be more time consuming than profitable.

That being said, if you really want it, don't go over $100!

I know where you're coming from, Rick. But remember I just paid $100 to have a right side rechromed...use that when you price them.

I didn't say, in the first message, that before he sent me the pictures, the guy quoted me a price of <span style="color: #FF0000">$500</span>.

Being new to all this "project car" car business, I didn't know if that was a good deal or not.

Does anyone know of a BGT "fixer-upper" for sale in the Dallas / Fort Worth area?

I only need a roller, not a runner. I want to try my hand at fixing up a car, and I've wanted a BGT since the early '80s.

I plan to drive up to McKinney, for the Texas MG Register car show on the 10th of November. Maybe I can make some contacts there.
 
Don't walk away yet....offer him $100 & you might get lucky to find an overdrive transmission....& you can get your money back by selling a few parts...& learn things that'll help when you start building another.
 
Are you the one in Plano who posted "Looking for a project car" on CraigsList?

If so, why do you include the 75's? Are you looking for a chrome bumper model? Have you looked through all the ads anywhere close to you? Have you looked up your local MG club?

Yes offer him the $100 ya never know. I got a cheap parts car that was toast but the OD is going into my roadster in the AM and I've cleared decent money selling & trading parts.

Yep.

I figured "a chrome bumper (or Sebring) conversion is easier than making a car out of thin air". If I can't find anything else, I reasoned a '75 is better than nothing. Besides, I hear the rubber-bumper cars make better starting points for V8 conversions.

I thought they didn't import GTs to the US after '75.

Unfortunately, the car in the photos currently sits over 100 miles away. Since I'd have to rent a pickup and a trailer, and buy 200 miles worth of fuel to bring it back here, the prospect of making any money off selling parts becomes minimal.

If I have to go that far for a car, I want something with a chance of getting back on the road some day.
 
My criteria is a tad tougher - though not quite up to Tony's standard.

If I can drive it home and I think it's "special" for some reason then I get the Wife's approval and buy it.

We are both members of our local MG club and I value her input.
(she doesn't even read this forum!)
Plus it makes it a whole lot easier when I want to spend money on the car that "we" decided "we" would buy /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
 
Grab it for $100, drag it home and strip any high value parts (gauges, split bumper, carbs, manifolds, cylinder head, distributor, etc.) then drag it to the scrap metal merchant, where you'll probably get $80 for the steel. And of course, check to see if it's got an O/D gearbox!
