I hope to be painting my midget in the near future and I was wondeing if anyone has painted one recently and how much paint it took. I will be doing basecoat clearcoat and using a traditonal type spray gun.
 
What are you painting? enginebay, inside cockpit, trunk?

I painted inside the enginebay, outside, and visible parts of the cockpit, and the trunk. It took 3 quarts of color and about the same in clear. However, I used an HVLP gun and it was my first time spraying this type of paint:

I had a fair amount of sanding to do on the clear coat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I know an MGB will "consume" a gallon if engine bay/interior/trunk are done too. So three quarts for a Spridget seems about right! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Check the pricing, usually 1 gal costs the same as 3 qts, at least that has been my past experience.
 
...and having some "left over" from the same "mix" can come in handy in the event of a needed repair later. Stored in the smallest airtight container it will fit.

I was shocked when I bought mine from the local autopaint supplier that they do all their pricing by the quart.

It has been some time since I have bought auto paint, but my past experience was that it was cheaper to buy the gallon, maybe things have changed.
 
I think it depends on the supplier/dealer. But it is ceratinly good advice to check first.
 
I just painted one last night.
3 coats of the same color not doing the jambs and engine bay and a qt will do it.
If you are changing colors, get a gallon. when I change the color I do the insides of the outer door skins, boot, floors, etc.
2 qts if you are going over primer and not doing the jambs etc.

So. if you are going to do it RIGHT, get the gallon. It's much better to have leftover paint, than it is to run out.

I won't be doing the engine bay or inside the trunk. I have already painted the whole enigne area with the fenders off. I did a lot of it in por15 and then top coated it with rustoluem. The trunk inside I took down to the bare metal or the rust and cleaned it with naval jelly and then por15 and then a coat of liquid truck bed liner and then a coat of rustoleum. I will do the door jambs.
 
I have been looking to get a real body shop to paint my 65 when I get her back together. Where are you all painting? Do you have a proper paint booth? Heat lamps etc? If not can you share a little about your process? I've taken mine down to bare metal and am in the process of replacing the swiss cheese parts. Almost ready to paint. Its spring! I'm late, I'm Late!

I'm a Cretin. Did mine in the driveway.
 
I borrowed my father's neighbor's paint booth. He has a fresh air pump and such (no heat lamps though). However, my father has painted MANY cars in his garage. But he has always used exhaust fans and the afore mentioned fresh air apparatus or "organic vapors" repirator. Lack of a proper paint booth means more color sanding, and slower overall process.

Painted lots of cars in the front yard...lol. Sanded them a bunch too..Nothing irked me more than the mosquitoes that would want to walk across the hood say around 5pm

I used an acrylic with hardener so it "went off" quickly, BUT: I found that the "love bugs" here have a GRAND affinity for the chemistry used in the painting process... I've "archived" more than a few of the li'l muthas in the paint. Think epoxy "Jurassic Park" here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

They didn't give a fig about the primer, but as soon as I put color in the gun I had a literal SWARM of thousands of 'em coming outta the woodwork! I had to wait for two weeks before I could shoot color again. Their "season" passed.
 
Garage paint jobs. exhaust fan in one window, crack the other window, use the proper mask (I don't use a fresh air mask, just a vapor mask) and a pack of 1500 sandpaper for the day after becuase the bugs, dust, and hairs will find the fresh paint but they wet sand out and buff up just fine.
