OK not that we want to admit it but I am wondering if I am spending way too much on this car, I paid around 7500 and I think I have spent about 12K so far, it this too mucH? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I bet everybody struggles with this occasionally. The only comforting thought I've had is that I've never really lost a lot in this hobby, after owning now my 8th Triumph (with a couple of parts cars thrown in there). I've certainly beaten the depreciation loss I've had with our regular cars.

Best thing is to just keep checking prices on VTR, ebay, etc. and gauging your car condition and associated value - you'll probably have a pretty close estimate of what your car is really worth and if you've overinvested or not.

I have been wondering about how much to spend also, not because I am afraid of spending money on my dream, but because I am not sure of the route I want to go.

I have been leaning towards maintaining this car for a driver and looking for either a restoration candidate or buying one that has been done. Also no matter how perfect the car, it will be a driver. No trailer queens at this house.

I am not interrested in tearing apart the only car I have so I do not have one to drive. Given that choice I will only do maintenance.
 
Actually, I switched over to this hobby from bass fishing. If it's enjoyment, it's worth it. Anyone who looks at this with an eye on finances should look the other way! (I came to this realization when I figured the price per pound for the fish I brought home!)

My neighbor came home with a $45,000 bass boat the other day. And that did not include the 200 horse motor on it or the trailer. My thought was, if that is what you enjoy then I am excited for you!

My other hobby is garden railroading. If I get as much in my TR as I have in that I will have a very nice TR.

I decided a long time ago that having fun is far more important than the money.
 
I have all my Triumph receipts in a cabinet in a garage. I have a rule. Never, Never add anything up.

I didn't buy this car for an investment, but rather as a hobby.. pretty much my only hobby. I figure with two boys, at least one of them will want to take up the project with me. Some people fish, some play golf, some play computer games.... all very expensive hobbies over the long haul.

As with any hobby, if you go into knowing that you probably won't get you investment out of it, then you'll be OK.
 
Don't count the resto money. I've kept practically every receipt and maintain a "repair/restoration" logbook with dates, amounts, kind of part, etc.

But, I've never added it all up. I'm afraid it would cause mild depression and deter my enthusiasm, or something. . . /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

With a bit of experience in this game, one should be able to tell about how much money restoring a given car may take. If you don't know this approximated sum before you purchase a project car, wait until you're more informed.

It's not rocket science, anyone can do it with a bit of study. And to gain this knowledge is well worth the waiting because it makes the entire restoration experience more enjoyable. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/square.gif
 
I have much more time than money invested. I bought my car as a wreck out of Arizona and proceeded to build it combining it with my old TR6. My estimates, having depreciated the value of the old car since I didn't appreciate it to begin with, are that I have under $5,500 dollars into it.
I was fortunate that I didn't have to buy a lot of big stuff.

Now I just point to that TR4 that sold at auction so my wife doesn't ask too many questions.
All I can hope for now that that someone steals it so the insurance company will pay what it is worth.

We've owned our TR6 since new and spent very little in the first 30 years. It's just in the last year or two, when I've become more interested in this hobby than others, that I've started to spend any serious money. Is it worth it? To me yes, to another maybe no, but I don't care about anyone else. Look at my website and you be the judge, but again, it won't matter to me because I enjoy it.

On the other hand, I belong to a very nice country club. I played golf this morning and all I thought about was driving the TR6 to a nice beach area for lunch with my wife. Now if I were to count what I've spent on club memberships in the past thirty years, that would really make me sick. I could have a nice stable of LBC's.

The point, at least to me, is that I love my little car. I want it to look nice, but be a driver to have fun with. When I tire of it, I'll put it in the garage under it's cover until I feel that it's time to play again.

Now when exactly is the body shop going to be done?????
