Ok, you must have at least heard about it. Lottery is $540 million plus. What would YOU do with the $$$$? After giving to BCF of course!

Let the dreaming begin!!

I would put it all in some low-risk, medium return financial products, then think about what to do for a year or two.

Lottery = Tax on people who are bad at statistics.

Keep quiet about that. It's better that people pay this voluntary tax then me having to pay it involuntarily to make up the shortfall from not having a lottery.

Just heard on Fox and Friends that in New York state alone they are selling 1.2 million tickets per hour!

it ain't worth it- You would only get about 250 million after taxes.

We used to call it a "stupidity tax."
It still amazes me that when a lottery goes about, say, $100M that people think "oh, gee, NOW it's worth buying tickets."

According to the paper here this morning, it's about 389 mil after taxes are deducted..

I'd wait awhile to claim, let the fuss die down so your picture isn't in every paper letting the scammers know who has cash. Then, who knows.

When my son was seven years old he wanted me to buy more lotto tickets since there was a $20 million jackpot. I tried explaining that the odds were about 1 in 125,000 of winning. He wasn't quite grasping the concept so I told him to give me his piggy bank and the jackpot would be on the kitchen table of one of the houses in the city. We would then drive around the city and I told him to let me know which house to stop at.... if the jackpot was there it was his... if not I keep the piggy bank.
He got the concept real quick!

No NO - that makes perfect sense, that's the logic I use (almost never buy tickets BTW) but why waste your luck on a mere 4 million?

BTW nice new gif signature - like a British Car, looks good and then you get closer and it still looks good and then you get very close and it dissolves into dust (rust) appropriate!

I look at buying lottery tickets this way: it's not about the winning (statistically speaking you won't) it's about some inexpensive entertainment. I expect that the couple bucks I'll spend every few years when there's a huge jackpot will be gone. But for spending that money I get to spend some time dreaming with friends about what we'd do if we won (I'd give some to my entire department so we could all retire at once -- "Yes boss, we're leaving today at 3:30. No you don't understand, the passwords are taped to the door, keys are on the desk, we're leaving.").

So sure, I gave a friend who was going to be up in S. Dakota this weekend a few dollars to pick up some tickets for me. Why not? I know I'll never see any financial return but for a few days I'm able to pretend -- there is a chance after all, however infinitesimal -- that I could win. Fun and cheap. Healthier than the lunch our or donuts I'd normally buy.

Different story for those folks who play all the time with money they need for the basics.

Yes, a bit like gambling in general. I've been to Vegas where I went to tables to blow $50... and knowing I'd eventually lose it, I did, but it was entertainment while it lasted. Still, a lottery ticket just isn't the same for me. :yesnod:
