How long should it take to obtain oil pressure

Hello all, Ive been working on restoring a 62 bn7 for my wife for 2 years now. Its coming along pretty good and I am going to start the engine this Saturday after I tweek a few things. My question is how long should it take to obtain oil pressure at the gauge? The engine has been completley rebuilt and the spark plugs are out. Distributer cap is off the engine will turn over as I have cranked it about 4 times 15 seconds or so, no oil pressure. I also poured oil back down through the spin on filter pipe hoping it would prime the oil pump. Any suggestions???????? Thanks BlueRidge 1

Welcome to the forum.
This situation can be unnerving. If the sump is full or even a bit overfull the pump should be partially submerged so that oil would eventually run into it for priming.

Some spin on filters have a poor anti drain back valve which could allow the oil to drain back between cranking tries. If the pump is working, there should be "some" oil in the filter by now. Make sure that the filter is filled before screwing it on. Possibly replace the filter with another brand. Don't use Fram.

I assume that the oil pump is turning if the distributor is turning & that the gage is working.

You are doing it correctly, don't try to start it until pressure shows.

Try cranking for 30 seconds, oil pressure gage line disconnected, & see if any oil flows. You may be just about to get oil flow.

As a last resort, you can pull the oil pan & pack the pump with Vaseline. Verify that there are no suction side leaks on the pump. I hope you don't have to go this far.

If you pull the valve cover you should be able to see oil flow at the rockers while cranking over. Once flow starts, pressure will follow right behind. While not instantaneous, I was able to induce flow on a chevy I recently built by turning the oil pump drive by hand (using a "dead" distributor shaft)! Bob
 
I had the same problem after rebuilding my engine. I put on a spin-on filter adapter so that the filter goes staight on the engine block. I had mounted that 180 degrees wrong. If you have a spin on adapter like that, be sure that it is mounted correct, beacuse it will block the oil if it is mounted wrong.
 
Thanks Dave, I poured some oil through a small hose into the small hole at the oil filter adapter. I had been putting the oil in the big hole were the filter spins on . The small hole must go to the pump. After doing that I cranked it about 15 seconds and realized about 60 pounds of pressure at the gauge. Looks like every things a go for Cranking her up Saturday ,wish me luck. BlueRidge1
