In the hospital waiting for an x-ray of my arm that I broke!!! :wall:

We were leaving my son's apartment at about 11pm...excuse me, i have to type one handed, so i'm going to forgo the caps...when i slipped on the ice and broke the fall with my right hand and arm. as soon as i hit the ground i knew it was broken. first bone i've broken in all my 62 years.

it was a slow night in the e.r., so i was x-rayed, splinted up and out of there by 1am. the break was clean and not dislodged much, so hopefully it should heal ok. the ortho guy was not in the office yesterday, so i have to go see him today. they gave me a prescription for oxycodone...325mg...but it just takes the edge off. when does the pain subside??? and how long do bones take to heal??? this is a major inconveience doing everythig with only my left hand.

Very sorry to hear that Art, thank goodness it was your arm and nothing worse. Not sure about the bone healing time, just don't try to rush it. Good news (if any!) is that your left handed dexterity is going to get better!

You: But Doc, will I be able to play the violin once my arm heals.
Doc: Yes, no problem.
You: Great, I've always wanted to play the violin!

badumdumdum

Get that shifting arm healed by the good weather. Could have been worse if you broke it during driving season. And now, you won't have to shovel the snow either.

I know you've probably heard this, but it could have been much worse. Glad to hear that you are on the mend.

Having broken two bones in my youth (Left ankle when I was 14, Right ankle when I was 22) It should feel better today and heal within 6 weeks. I found that the best thing for the pain was Advil. I'm not sure if 62 year old bones heal as quickly as 22 year old bones though! What a terrible way to usher in 2009! I hope you're feeling better soon!
T:smile:

On the bright side at least was last year that you broke it, so you won't have that omen hanging over your head for '09. The pain will subside and the bone will heal as soon as your roads are ice free and safe to drive on, it will just be one of those coincidences I'm sure. I'm 58 and break free, knock on GT6 dash!
And of course it could have been so much worse.

Bummer!!

I just turned 60 and I've had 14 broken bones from
various mishaps. I tripped 4 years ago and broke my wrist
rather badly. They had to rebreak it and the total heal
time was 10 weeks.

Purchase a few pairs of pants with velcrox zippers.
I learned very quickly standard pants zippers require
two hands.

Besy wishes fro a speedy recovery,

d

First of all, thanks to everyone for the well wishes. secondly, i just got back from the ortho doc and he took more x-rays. he's not convinced that this break is so simple and wants to send me to yet another guy for another round of opinions. :eeek:

well, at least they put on a regular cast, and it feels better then the splint. i also had the doc give me a prescription for some more potent pain killers!

And Dale, you are right about the pants. it's real tough to do one handed. i'll see about getting something in velcro!!!

Art: first of all I am sorry to hear of your misfortune but glad it wasn't your noggin! This kind od accident happened to my wife a few years ago. I am embarrased because at the time she had opened the front door to retrieve a small package of TR parts. The poor soul slipped on ice and fell, broke her right (non-dominant) radius in 2 places. This required surgery and some metal work. She was able to use her arm lightly in about 6 weeks and finally regained full strength in a few months. It sounds like your situation may be better. Guys don't have the tendency for osteoporosis like women do.

Best of luck on a quick recovery - don't push it. Just think of it this way, when it's time for the cast to come off winter will almost be over.

I went down TWICE on the ice last Wednesday! I credit years of Jiu-Jitsu training in my youth for the fact that I have yet to damage myself in such an incident. I actually DO know how to fall...

No amount of fall training was enough to prevent broken bones accumulated through some of the bone-headed things I've done in motor vehicles, (also my bicycle) however. Growing older, and reaching the conclusion that a broken bone probably wouldn't heal as quickly anymore, is one of the reasons I came to the decision to sell my BMW motorcycle and restore the TR3. The TR3 has four wheels and is less likely to fall over on me if I hit a slick spot on the road.

You will probably heal up just fine, but it will take longer than it would have in your youth. I don't know what shape your cast is, but besides problems with my fly, the last cast I had to wear effectively prevented me from tying my own shoes for two weeks! The inconvenience and the pain are supposed to be cautionary reminders to be more careful, or something... In my case, it took years for that to work.

Hope you feel better soon!

Awww Art... THAT's not anything I'd wanted to hear. Others have said it: six to ten weeks. The pain actually may "change" for four or so. Then odd "tingling" off-and-on.

I'm with Lenny... PLF's as a "landing technique" here tho... I'm sure it's kept me outta hospital on occasion.

We don't miss the caps, but we WOULD miss YOU if ya stopped postin' for six weeks! Peck away, friend. We'll sitll read it.

...I HATE winter....

Almost forgot!!

Do NOT think as soon as the brace 'n sling come off that you're back to "normal". Take it 'gingerly' for another few.
