TR2/3/3A How does TR3A Adjustable Steering Work?

Just bought an uncompleted TR3A restoration project and am trying to figure out how one works the adjustable steering. Mine is fixed at the outboard position, placing the steering wheel six or seven inches away from the dash, and the center is loose. How is it supposed to work? How do I push the steering wheel in? Thank you.

Should be a collar at the base of the wheel (the "locking sleeve" in the diagram below), that you can unscrew to allow the wheel to slide on the shaft. If it won't slide, there may be problems inside.

The steering column is splined. Twist the the collar that is behind the steering wheel to loosen the locking mechanism. The steering wheel will move forward or back depending on the current position. More than likely the wheel has rusted around the splines and you will need to lubricate it well and maybe you can coax it to move. There is chrome banding trim that will expand as you put the wheel forward.

Maybe it's in all the way now. I've found that the adjustable steering wheels seem to start out too close, and then adjust even closer! :hammer:

:iagree:

Funny, a fellow Forum member and I were discussing that very scenario late this afternoon (Hi, Dennis!) over what remains of a '56 TR3 rolling hulk in my yard. He was commenting on the nonadjustable column in that car and noting how he'd just converted his TR3 FROM an adjustable column...for the very reason you state!

Thanks. Must be broken or rusted because it ain't moving either way when I unscrew the column... I am very tempted to convert it to a fixed column.
