How do you Waxoyl [or Other] treat Frame rails?

Re: How do you Waxoyl [or Other] treat Frame rail

Ah, Cosmoline. If you want to protect and preserve anything FOREVER , pack it in that stuff. NOTHING penetrates it.

Re: How do you Waxoyl [or Other] treat Frame rail

I diluted some anti-rust primer paint and poured it inside the inner sills before I welded the tub of my TR3A back together again. This was in 1988. I finished it all and then sprayed diluted Waxoyl into the frame from the rear end which was open and through the small hole in the front end.

The frame and all under body parts are painted black with two-pack DuPont Imrom. I did not apply any Waxoyl or other underbody protection over the paint.

In the 16 years since then, I have driven 94,000 miles and there is still no rust - anywhere. During that time, I guess, I have washed the car about 75 times and driven it only about 4,000 miles in the rain.

When people drive their LBCs about 1,000 miles a year, I don't know why they are so concerned about new rust developing.

Don,
Because most of us dream about rust and deterioration. We can hear, if you listen really closely, rust monsters lurking about knowing there is some exposed area of vigin metal cringing in want of protection.....other than that, no reason.

I would like to hear more about the use of Penetrol..... I have a commercial grade airless sprayer that would work well to spray into the sills and frame on my Spitfire.

I finally got around to spraying a rust converter (Ben Moore M82 specifically) into the TR6 rockers. It goes on pretty thick and I used a cheap garden sprayer to apply it.

Like most converters it turns exposed rust into a black inert (in theory anyway) primer like finish. It was pretty shocking to see how much rust it found.

I tried Penetrol last year and it 'seemed' to work, but hard to tell since I sprayed it into an MGB GT sills. I wasn't sure that it would actually stop existing rust so I decided to be more aggressive this time around.

Next step is to spray in Eastwood Anti-rust, which appears to be similar to Waxoyl.

If you do use Penetrol make sure to have a lot of ventilation and put down a LOT of paper or similar under the car. Penetrol stains concrete almost instantly...
