I've been known to spin up a newly tuned engine expecting the rotor to distribute sparks appropriately from its position on the workbench.

I still don't see why that scheme doesn't work.
 
seems to me it should work just as good as leaving the hot lead off of the coil!


oh wait, it does ... heh
 
And what exactly IS that little plastic thingy that goes inside the distributor and points at each of the contact posts as it spins around.....that's not REALLY needed is it?

Even worse is sticking the screwdriver in the slot to adjust the dwell and spinning the engine, forgetting to remove the rotor first. SNAP!

I've heard of someone starting the car with only 3 plugs installed and then wondering ~why~ is was idling "a bit rough"... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif
