Oh, wait. Is it supposed to be like that? I just checked the TRF assembly manual and it is actually listed like that for early differentials. This was was removed from a 1974, but it's been off before judging by the differential mount repair. It looks like that is correct for the later units as well.

Hmmm...I would have thought there would be more of a plug type assembly.

Yes, I think that probably is correct!

Crazy, but hey if that is how they did it....

Think it is OK to pressure wash this as long as the pin is pushed all the way down?

Pressure wash. Well as long as you remember there's a hole there. Maybe a temporary plug (chewing gum ?) around the cotter pin.
Then again, how much water can get in there ? You're going to drain and replace the oil anyway.

BTW,I don't know what's holding your cotter pin in there, but originally the legs were flared out from the inside.

Skip, you can figure out if it is working by turning your diff over and leaving it overnight.....

Cheers,

"how do you like my custom diff breather"
IMHO
I don't. sorry. But then i don't like any that come on any car.
I think there should be a 3/8" to 1/2" hose that runs across and up into the trunk space up high with a small filter on the end. That way you never get dirt or water into your diff.
