How do you figure out a cam's valve clearance

Hey guys,

When my engine was rebuilt 15 years ago, we used an aftermarket cam that my dad had used in his tr4 many years before. Long story short, I have no idea what the specs on it are.

How does one go about sussing out what the correct valve clearances for it would be? I don't have a dwell meter or other such tools.

Clearance depends on what the cam specs are and are usually given by the cam manufacturer on their data sheet. If you know what manufacturer and model you have then you can often find the clearance on their website. The more lift on the cam the more clearance is usualy needed. If it's got more lift than stock I would expect you could use a clearance of roughly 0.014" to 0.016"
 
If you've got a higher lift and longer duration cam, it will be happy at the numbers Graham gave you. If not, the valves will clatter a lot and then you can back the down a thou or two.
