How do you check transmission fluid?

Hi folks, I'm almost reluctant to post this but I believe dumb questions are still free. How do you check the transmission fluid on a 61 AH Sprite?
 
Lift up the carpet around the shifter, and you'll see a rubber plug/cover on the left side of the tunnel. Remove that and you'll see a fill plug on the transmission. Remove that and you can see the fluid level. Should be level with the threads.
 
No dumb questions here. There is a rubber cover on the left side of the tunnel below the shifter. Remove that and you will see a large plug nut on the transmission. Unscrew that and have a look. Good luck screwing the nut back in without making a mess. You also fill from this location. If you can work from underneath it is a little easier.

As has been said - enjoy getting the plug back in! :-)

For me, it's easier if I have someone holding a flashlight while I fumble with the plug and curse like a longshoreman with a hemmorhoid.
 
Dumb questions are OK--I've asked my share--but I'll repeat my standard mantra: This kind of thing is in any shop manual, so it sounds like you don't have one. You really should get one. Without it, sooner or later you'll do something you'll regret. You can get a Haynes manual for about $15, and it's pretty good.
 
Are you checking the condition, level or both? You can't check condition except by draining it out the bottom plug. Then you'll have to open the top plug through the tranny hump access hole anyway. .. 11/16" IIRC. An extension helps.
 
The Tunebug, Little Blue,The Red Thing, and Sarastro-thanks for the info. I do have parts of the Haynes, but agree, it's time to get the manual.
 
Transmission fluid should be red or oil colored, why would you want it checked? :crazyeyes: :jester:
