Re: How do the rear quarter panels fit

Boy, when you said rear quarter panels, I thought you meant fenders, oops WINGS.
I don't have any experience with those inner panels, but you should see my new wings I got from Moss. They fit worse than your quarters.

Re: How do the rear quarter panels fit

If they are the same as my BJ8, the front edge, right next to the door opening, is held in place by four sheet metal screws with decorative cup washers. Towards the rear, the panel is held to the wheel well by the seat belt attaching bolts. Finally, the parcel shelf back has a small oval clip into which the very top rear of the panel fits. Could be different with your model.

Re: How do the rear quarter panels fit

Hey Chicken

I have just removed mine ( BJ7) and they were hand made - not by me and not to the correct profile. The rear fixings are onto the the metal bracket that holds the back of the rear seat and that appears to be missing off your car, whilst the front is fitted onto a return strip just to the rear of the door opening - all chrome self tapping screws with chrome cups. The rear seat belt mount passes through it. Give me an e-mail on robert.hughes@gmail.com and I will send you photos of what I have. I must stress that it may not be thye proper way to installthem but it will not be a million miles from it.

Re: How do the rear quarter panels fit

Hi Chicken,
Mine is an early (phase one) BJ8. The back of those panels are attached to the back board (behind the fold down seat) with two bolts that run through the inner wheel well, through the back of the inner vinyl covered panels, and into the back board. This may not apply to the BJ7's.

Hello Rob,

As requested:
Here's some photos of my quarter panel interior, from a 64 BJ8 phase two.

It looks like the hardware between the 7's and 8's are fairly different. Generally, the panels fit together the same. The bracket in Roger's 4th photo is different from a 7.

Hi Rob,
You probably know this already, but I'll say it anyway. :smirk: Don't drill any holes until every piece is complete and all pieces have been fit together in the cockpit. That includes any carpet on the bulkhead and wheel wells. A ÂĽ" can really ruin your day.

Thanks for that, it's getting clearer now, on my BJ7 i have yet to fit the metal brackets that hold the rear pack seat panel in place so perhaps these have a fixing on for the side panels ?
Also what is the square hole in the panel for ?

Rob

The square hole in the side panel is for the square slide out bar. Greg's photo shows the slide out bar and the round peg that moves the slide out bar. When the seat back is in the up position, the round peg fits into the opening that Greg has circled. Nice photo Greg.

There are two bolts on a BJ8 that start though the wheel well, through the side panel and bolt into the side of the back rest. There should be 2 threaded inserts in the wood ends of the back rest. Greg shows one bolt sticking out (to the right of his circle) on the side of the back rest in his photo. I show where the two go though the BJ8's wheel well.

I'm guessing the BJ7's rear seat back, does not fold down to make a shelf like the BJ8's?

Hi Roger,
That's interesting about the two bolts. I didn't have much to go on when I remade my squab. Most of the wood had rotted away. I did find an old photo of the wheel well though, where I can only see one bolt head. ??? I wonder if that was BMCs way of saving money towards the end. I never really thought about it since there are the three screws holding the squab down along the bottom too.

Hello,I have a suggestion for you ,go to the Austin Healey U.S. club sites and let the members know you are in Britain and are restoring a right hand drive Healey.I wager you will have a time with all the responses. The members of the clubs are super supportive of the marque,I think you could possibly even be "adopted" by a club.Further, you could submit a story to Healey Marque or AHUSA Magazines, they are always seeking material.I work for a Healey restoration shop, and currently we are building a tri carb, fitting a head to a factory 100-m,and building a BN-1 100-m. Our 2 previous cars have been met with approval in shows, and we most enjoy getting together at meets and sharing the Healey experience. We also are fitting a FACTORY AC unit in a BJ8,it is always fun to go to work !!Best...Wheelwright

Re: How do the rear quarter panels fit

Roger,

Is there any chance you have a picture of the top of the shut pillar where the aluminum trim ends? I am trying to figure out how to trim the top, I have excess.

Re: How do the rear quarter panels fit

Hello Jerry,

There are five items to pay attention to, that will end up trimming the top area.

1. The aluminum shut face. (Moss 802-775/785)
2. The shut pillar finisher piping. (moss 249-880)
3. The door seal (I recommend using Bristleflex brand)
4. The door seal end clip (Moss 204-530)
5. The shut pillar top seal (Moss 803-875/885)

Photo one shows how where I needed to trim the top of the aluminum to allow the addition of the piping and shut pillar top seal to be level with the rear cockpit molding, photo two.

Photo 5 shows how the shut pillar top seal will seal against the convertible top seal end cap.

All these parts must meet each other if you HOPE that your top will be SORT OF water tight and help to keep the wind noise down.

Let me know if I can provide you with any more help or photos.
Good luck,
Roger

Re: How do the rear quarter panels fit

Roger,

This is perfect. I see how they fit together also. I also notice where the chrome finisher fits also.

Roger

Looking at your photo's you posted again i guess the rear inner trim panels are the same for the BJ7 & BJ8.
So the front edge of the panel is fixed to a short 1/2" lip on the door shut pillar with 3 screws and the center of the panel held with the seatbelt mounting bolts, then the only difference can be is how the rear of the panel is secured, any ideas, it's not the same as the BJ8 ????

Rob

Hello Rob,

I'm sorry I can not say for certain how the rear panel is held to together. I'm sure a BJ7 owner will chime in soon. You are correct about the BJ8, and I will ad to it.

The BJ8 is held in place as such:

1. The front edge of the panel is fixed to a short 1/2" lip on the door shut pillar with 3 screws.

2. Over the front edge, the weather-strip is pressed on.

3. The center of the panel is held with the seatbelt mounting bolts

4. Two bolts go through the rear of the panel and get screwed into the side of the seat back.

5. A right angle bracket is screwed into the top of the seat back and the top of the side panel.

I just took these photos for you. Maybe they will help.
Good luck,
Roger
