How do I wire this new Gear Reduction Starter??

I just received my new Gear Reduction starter (from Rivergate 5-speed), hooked it up (in the same manner as my original Lucas) and the only thing that happens when you turn the key, is the bendix solenoid kicks in (and out).

There is one little 1/4" spade connector terminal about 2" over from the main heavy gauge power wire that I did not hook up because I didn't know anything about it, nor was there a diagram with my starter. I'm assuming my problem lies therein??

Is anybody familiar with this configuration? I would have just called rivergate, but it's Sat night, they are not open, and I want to get this thing running again!

I think it has it's own solenoid. You can just jump power over to it if you want to keep using your existing solenoid.

I googled it, and figured it out! That's exactly the case, it has it's own solenoid. Turns over like never before now!! Thanks for the reply tho!!

Congrats! Both terminals need a connection. I'll make a jumper from a ring tongue terminal that fits over the post, a small piece of #14 wire and a female spade terminal. Place the ring end of the little jumper under the main power cable and push the female spade onto the other connector. Keep's it simple.

The alternative is to wire a power feed from the ignition switch to the small terminal when the key is turned to start. This arrangement kind of defeats the need for the Lucas solenoid. I like to keep the Lucas solenoid in the system so that if I need to go from the gear-reduction back to the original types, it is a simple replacement.

Those gear reduction starters sure are nice. Just keep an eye on the mounting plates. I seem to crack them regularly and am always welding them back together.
