How Do I Get Birds out of my Chimney?

We have birds nesting in our fireplace.
We haven't had a fire in it in years.I thought
that they'd be gone by now,but the noises are
starting to get on my nerves.
Please,only humane suggestions.

After you get them out install a chimney cap like this....
 
Start a fire. They'll leave. One way or the other.

It sounds cruel, but they are like squirrels. Cute when they're outside, not so cute in your attic or living area.

Then install the cap.
 
angliagt, id also say start a fire perhaps a small one else you may end up "eating crow", using a spray bottle containing water spraying just enough on the log/newspaper or what ever combustable you have handy to create smoke, thell get the hint, and as has been mentioned put on the cap.
 
Now if there are babies in a nest and the parents fly the coop you have to listen to the young uns cry until they die of starvation

Hire a Chimney Sweep
 
You didn't say how long they've been in there...I've had house wrens build nests in weird places. They're usually gone in 2-3 months max. I've never had a family of birds stick around for a real long time - but they <span style="font-style: italic">will</span> tend to try to come back to the same place the next season.
 
:iagree: Then install a chimney cap. After having 2 birds get into our house via the chimney, I had the caps installed. Best dollar I ever spent - never thought about a cover and I guess our GC when we built the house didn't either. Good Luck!
 
Climb up on top of the roof & snake a long rope down into your fireplace....then, go down & tie a big basket to the rope that'll go up the chimney through your damper...then, climb back up & pull the basket to the top of the chimney....do it again & again until you've snagged the nest (or at least knocked it down into your fireplace (don't forget to close the fireplace door before trying thih).

Interesting ideas!?I was thinking on how to even
look down & see what kind of birds they are (I'd have-
to put on a helmet,gloves,etc).I also thought about
looking up ( bird droppings coming down?).
I know I need to cap it once they're gone.
